How regrouting works in Aberdeenshire

Grout is the filler between your tiles, while sealant goes where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop. Once grout starts to crack or wash away, water can get in behind the tiles. We rake it out and replace it, then reseal the corners and edges. We are often asked to deal with gaps where the shower grout has gone and grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned, on bathroom wall tiles, shower walls and bathroom floors.

All our tools and materials come with us in the van, so there’s nothing for you to buy. Once we’ve agreed what’s being done, we protect the area and start. Most jobs take anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area.

  1. First we agree what’s being done and flag any loose tiles.
  2. We remove the old grout carefully.
  3. The joints are cleaned out and vacuumed.
  4. The new grout goes in, then the tile faces are cleaned.
  5. Internal corners and edges are resealed.

Bathrooms and kitchens across Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire has homes of every age, old and new, with plenty of rented property in places like Peterhead, Inverurie and Montrose. Regrouting keeps bathrooms and kitchens watertight and looking cared for.

Our work covers the whole of Scotland, Aberdeenshire included. Longer journeys are planned in advance, and outdoor work around the weather. Along the coast in Aberdeenshire, window and wall joints facing the sea take the brunt of the weather, and that’s where sealant normally gives up first. The right product and careful preparation help it last.

Peterhead: Whether the job is in Peterhead itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish. In and around Peterhead, as anywhere, good regrouting starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Looking after it afterwards

How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Have loose tiles looked at early
  • Rinse soap off the tiles after each shower
  • Open a window or run the fan to clear steam
  • Look at the sealant in the corners now and then

Leave the area unused for as long as we advise, so it cures fully. From then on, a quick rinse after showering helps and let the room air.

Stains that won’t clean are a sign the grout is breaking down. Regrouting at this stage is straightforward, before the joints open up.

What happens if it’s left?

It’s tempting to fill a few cracks yourself, but the patches often do not match, and the old grout keeps failing around them. Regrouting the whole area gives an even, lasting finish.

What your quote should include

  • How long the guarantee is
  • Who does the work, and how experienced they are
  • How long to leave it before use
  • What happens if the job turns out different

Can I do it myself?

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

Common problems we fix in Aberdeenshire

Most grout is porous, so it soaks up water, soap and dirt. Given time, it discolours and begins to break down, especially in a shower that is used every day.

Look out for these signs:

  • Dirty, worn grout on a tiled floor
  • Grout that is cracking and breaking up
  • Grout in a colour the owner wants to change
  • Grout stained black or orange that will not clean

Landlords, agents and businesses in Aberdeenshire

We regularly work with letting and managing agents. Tell us the address, the job and how access works and we will give you a quote.

Mouldy or split sealant often shows up at the end of a tenancy, and it’s easy to sort out between tenants. Several properties can be quoted together.

Questions from Aberdeenshire

Can you regrout just the shower?

We can. We’ll look at the rest of the room too and tell you if anything else needs attention.

Do you reseal at the same time?

In most cases, yes. The corners and edges should be silicone and doing both at once leaves everything sound.

How long does the job take?

A typical job takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room, including preparation and clearing up. We will confirm how long when we quote.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. Full insurance covers our work, and we can confirm the details when we quote.

How long should I wait before showering?

We’ll tell you on the day. It depends on the grout and the sealant used, so follow the time we give you.

Where are you based?

Our base is Crawley. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.

Can you seal over the old sealant?

No. The old sealant always comes out first.
