Regrouting in Tarves

When grout stays dark however much you clean it, the discolouration has generally soaked into the grout. Replacing it is the lasting answer and you can pick a different colour while you are at it. We work on wet rooms, kitchen splashbacks and bathroom floors, and the jobs we see most are grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned and corners filled with grout instead of silicone.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Tarves work just as hard as those in the cities. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

Each job carries a 12-month guarantee.

Different surfaces, different methods

Wet rooms

Wet rooms have water across the floor, so sound grout really matters. We check for loose tiles before starting.

Bathroom floors

Regrouting a floor brightens the whole room. The edges where floor meets wall or bath get silicone.

Tarves questions

Do you cover Tarves for regrouting?

Yes, Tarves is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.

Is Tarves within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

What should I tell you?

Where the job is, what the problem is and roughly how big it is. If you can, email a few photos.

What does regrouting cost?

The cost depends on the size of the job, access and how much old sealant has to come out. Call for a quick quote and we will talk you through it.

Should I try DIY first?

That depends on the joint. High-level, external movement and fire-rated joints are professional jobs, while a short indoor joint may be within reach.

How long does regrouting take?

Most jobs take a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room, including the preparation. We’ll confirm how long when we quote.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes, we do. Domestic, commercial and hotel work are all part of what we do, and we are fully insured.

Can you regrout just the shower?

We can. We’ll look at the rest of the room too and let you know if more needs doing.

Honest limits

We’ll always be straight with you, so here’s what sealant cannot fix:

  • Loose tiles, which need refixing first
  • A structure that flexes behind the tiles
  • Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling

Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

DIY versus a professional finish

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Keeping the joints in good condition

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering
  • Keep an eye on the silicone along the edges
  • Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
  • Keep harsh bleach and acid cleaners off the grout

Use a gentle cleaner on the grout and a soft brush. Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers, as they can break grout down.

Stains that won’t clean are a sign the grout is breaking down. Regrouting at this stage is straightforward, before the joints open up.

Regrouting in Tarves: local notes

Private landlords in Scotland must be registered and meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Tired, leaking sealant is worth putting right before a new tenant moves in. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that doesn’t dry out.

In the older streets around Tarves Parish Church, walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first. In and around Tarves, as anywhere, good regrouting starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

What happens on the day

Once we are on site, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. After that, the work takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. In smaller Scottish places, parking is generally less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work.

  1. We agree the area to be regrouted and point out any loose tiles.
  2. We remove the old grout carefully.
  3. Dust is cleared from every joint.
  4. The new grout goes in, then the tile faces are cleaned.
  5. Internal corners and edges are resealed.

How to prepare

  • Keep children and pets away from the work area
  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Mention any parking rules near the property

Advice

Why deal with it now?

It’s tempting to fill a few cracks yourself, but the patches often don’t match, and the old grout keeps failing around them. Doing the full area gives you one colour and sound joints throughout. In a place like Tarves, small leaks are easy to put off, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference.
