Regrouting in Alford
If you’ve been scrubbing grout that will not come clean, the stain is often in the grout itself. New grout is the fix that lasts, and it’s a chance to change the colour too. We work on kitchen splashbacks, wet rooms and tiled floors, and the jobs we see most are floor grout that has worn and darkened and greasy, stained grout behind the hob.
Bathrooms in smaller places like Alford work just as hard as those in the cities. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.
You’re covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything is not right with it, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

How to look after the new joints
No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:
- Rinse the tiles after showering
- Skip wire brushes and scourers
- Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering
- Run the extractor fan during and after a shower
Have any tile that moves checked right away. Movement will crack the new grout and open a path for water.
If grout in the shower is washing out, act soon. Each shower drives water into the open joints, and that water can reach the wall or the floor below.
Your questions about regrouting in Alford
Is there a guarantee on regrouting in Alford?
All our work, in Alford and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.
Will you come out to Alford?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Are you insured?
Yes. We are fully insured for every job we do.
Where are you based?
We are based in Crawley, and we work across South East England, London and Scotland.
How soon can the shower be used after regrouting?
The wait depends on the materials and how warm the room is. We will give you a time to follow when the job is done.
Should corners be grouted or sealed?
We use silicone in corners and along edges. Grout in a moving joint soon cracks.
Do you take out the old sealant first?
Yes. We cut out all the old sealant and clean the joint.
Can you quote for more than one area?
Yes. Just list everything you need.
How it works
Good joint work is mostly preparation, so that’s where we spend the time. Every joint is cleaned and dried before new material goes in. In total, it generally takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. Somewhere like Alford may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- First we agree what’s being done and flag any loose tiles.
- We remove the old grout carefully.
- The joints are cleaned out and vacuumed.
- We grout the joints and wipe the tiles clean.
- Internal corners and edges are resealed.
How to prepare
- Tell us about any water getting in
- Mention any tricky access
- For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
How to get a quote
We don’t publish a price list, as no two jobs are quite the same. Instead, your job gets its own clear quote. To arrange one, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
Advice
Leave it or put it right?
Patching a few joints can look like a quick win, but the patches often do not match, and the old grout keeps failing around them. Regrouting the whole area gives an even, lasting finish. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.
The cost depends on the size of the job, how hard the old material is to remove and how easy the joints are to reach. We give a clear quote before we start, so you know where you stand.

How we quote for regrouting
Your quote is based on your job. We look at:
- Any working-time requirements on site
- Mould in or behind the old joints
- Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
- How easy the joints are to reach
Doing several joints on one visit is normally more efficient than separate visits, so it’s worth mentioning everything you’d like done. You will get one clear quote for the whole job.
Asking for a quote
Photos help, but a description is a good start. Try to tell us:
- If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
- The address or postcode of the job
- Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
- The rough size of the job
For a quick quote, get us on the phone, or email us if that’s easier. Tell us about the joints that need doing and we’ll explain what’s involved.
DIY versus a professional finish
Some jobs are best left to a professional: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs need the right product, the right access and the right method.
A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
Other services in Alford
Regrouting in Alford: local notes
In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which covers keeping fixtures and fittings in a reasonable state of repair. Tired, leaking sealant is worth putting right before a new tenant moves in. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that does not dry out.
In the older streets around St Andrew's Episcopal Church, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.

Different surfaces, different methods
Wet rooms
Regrouting a wet room helps keep water on the surface of the tiles. It can’t fix waterproofing below the tiles.
Corners and edges
Where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop, the joint is sealed. Grout in that joint wouldn’t last.
Common problems we fix in Alford
Movement behind the tiles cracks grout. Loose tiles, bouncy floors and timber walls can all do it, which is why we check the tiles first.
Look out for any of the following:
- Shower grout that has worn away
- Grout that makes sound tiles look old
- Cracked or crumbling grout lines
- Floor grout that has worn and darkened
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Alford Academy, washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.
