Remedial sealant in Aberdeenshire: how it works
Getting old sealant out properly is slow, careful work. We cut out every layer, clear the residue and degrease the surfaces, taking care not to scratch the surfaces around it. New sealant only bonds to a clean, dry joint. Typical jobs include floor or wall movement joints that have failed and gaps opening along the back of the worktop, on mouldy bath & shower sealant, shrunken worktop sealant and expansion joints.
A visit follows a simple pattern: we look at the joints together, protect the area around them, do the work and clear up. It generally takes a few hours for most joints, depending on how much old sealant has to come out.
- We protect the surfaces around the joint.
- Every layer of failed sealant is stripped out.
- We clean and degrease the joint and look for signs of movement or water.
- Once dry, a suitable sealant is applied and tooled.
- You get the cure time and our view on why the joint failed.

Remedial sealant across Aberdeenshire: local notes
Homes across Aberdeenshire range from older properties to new builds, and in places like Peterhead, Inverurie and Montrose there’s plenty of rented property too. Remedial sealant keeps bathrooms and kitchens watertight and looking cared for.
Our work covers the whole of Scotland, Aberdeenshire included. Longer journeys are planned in advance, and outdoor work around the weather. Parts of Aberdeenshire are on or near the coast, where wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt air are hard on outside sealant. Walls facing the sea are usually the first to need attention.
Peterhead: Whether the job is in Peterhead itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish. In and around Peterhead, as anywhere, good remedial sealant starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.
How to look after the new joints
Good habits help new joints last longer. Our tips:
- Clean sealant with mild products only
- Have loose fittings fixed before resealing
- Do not add new sealant on top of old
- Find out why the sealant failed first
Keep the room ventilated: use the extractor or open a window after showering.
Warning signs: peeling layers, mould showing through the bead, leaks after showering or cracks in a movement joint. Any of them means it’s time for remedial work.
Landlords, agents and businesses in Aberdeenshire
Hotels need rooms back in use, so the work can be planned room by room. We have worked in hotels as well as homes and businesses.
From a single let to a portfolio, you get the same standard of work: old sealant fully removed, joints prepared properly and a 12-month guarantee.
Should I try it myself first?
If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.
Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.
Signs you need remedial sealant
Joints that move need sealant that can stretch. Flexing baths, rocking trays and building movement joints split any bead that is too stiff or too thin.
People generally contact us when they notice something like this:
- Movement joints that have split or pulled away
- Gaps opening along the back of the worktop
- Decorators’ caulk around a bath or shower
- A second bead peeling off the first
What affects the cost of remedial sealant
The price is agreed before any work begins. It takes into account:
- Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
- When we can work, for business premises
- The product the joint needs
- Mould in or behind the old joints
No two jobs are quite the same, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference, and we will explain the quote if you ask.
Helping us quote
To make quoting easier, please include:
- Any previous sealing or DIY work
- Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
- The problem you’ve noticed
- Where the job is, and your postcode
The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints, and email pictures if that’s easy.
Questions from Aberdeenshire
Someone sealed over the old bead. Can you fix it?
Yes. Each layer is cut out and the residue cleaned off, before resealing with a single bead.
What information do you need?
Just the basics: where it is, what you’ve noticed and how we reach it. Then send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.
My shower still leaks after a reseal. Can you sort it?
Yes. First we check whether the leak is the sealant at all, then the joints are stripped and resealed.
I rent my home. Can I book you?
Yes, though it’s best to check with your landlord first. Landlords are often happy for the work to be arranged.
Do you remove the old sealant?
Yes. Sealing over the old bead is the commonest cause of early failure, so we never do it.
When is the sealant fully cured?
Many sealants skin over quickly but take longer to cure fully. We will tell you how long to leave the joint.
Do you hold any approvals?
Yes. We are an ARBOMaster approved applicator.
