Catterline Remedial Sealant
Specialist remedial sealant for Catterline: careful preparation, the right product and tidy work. Call for a quick quote.
- Black mould underneath the bead
- Torn expansion joints
- Caulk or the wrong sealant used in a wet area
Aftercare tips
Good habits help new joints last longer. Our tips:
- Find out why the sealant failed first
- Keep an eye on the ceiling below the bathroom
- Use a soft cloth, not a scourer, on silicone
- Check trays and worktops do not move
Go easy on the new sealant: no scraping, scouring pads or harsh chemicals.
Leaks through failed sealant grow over time. Each use pushes more water behind the bead, into whatever is behind or below. Early action keeps it to a sealant job.
Remedial sealant for homes and businesses in Catterline
With more than 20 years’ experience, our applicators have seen most of the ways sealant can fail. We are fully insured ARBOMaster approved applicators, and remedial work carries our 12-month guarantee. We are often asked to deal with leaks that keep coming back after resealing and beads that never stuck properly, across shrunken worktop sealant, expansion joints and leaking tray & enclosure joints.
Bathrooms in smaller places like Catterline work just as hard as those in the cities. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.
Each job carries a 12-month guarantee, whatever its size.

Common problems we fix in Catterline
Water from somewhere else can ruin a good seal. A leaking valve, a failed waste or cracked grout feeds water behind the bead, and the sealant lifts or goes mouldy from underneath.
The most common problems we see are:
- Caulk or the wrong sealant used in a wet area
- Wide, uneven beads that look worse than the old ones
- Worktop sealant that has shrunk and split
- Sealant peeling off a dusty or damp surface
Rented homes near Stonehaven station change hands often, and a joint that keeps failing is best fixed properly while the property is empty.

Remedial sealant around Catterline
Catterline is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which covers keeping fixtures and fittings in a reasonable state of repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies.
If you live in an older home near Catterline Church, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

Honest limits
It helps to know what we cannot do:
- Failed tanking or loose tiles behind the sealant
- A cracked shower tray or bath (that needs repair or replacing)
- Old mastic in a building from before 2000 that should be checked for asbestos before it’s disturbed
Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before booking.

What happens if it’s left?
DIY removal often leaves scratches and a film of residue, and the residue left behind stops the next bead bonding. Careful stripping is where most of our time goes. In an older home around Catterline, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.
Some things make a job bigger or smaller: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.
Why choose Mr Mastic in Catterline
- Quality sealants from Arbo and Everbuild
- We never seal over old sealant
- A 12-month guarantee on all work
- Homes, businesses and hotels
Can I do it myself?
A DIY attempt does not rule out a professional job. We cut it out and start again, so just mention it when you contact us.
What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, then guaranteed for a year.
How it works
We keep the work tidy and contained to the area we are working on, so you can carry on as normal. The job generally takes a few hours for most joints, depending on how much old sealant has to come out. Somewhere like Catterline may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- We protect the surfaces around the joint.
- Every layer of failed sealant is stripped out.
- The joint is degreased and checked for movement and leaks.
- New sealant goes in once the joint is dry, and is tooled smooth.
- You get the cure time and our view on why the joint failed.
How to prepare
- Keep children and pets away from the work area
- Tell us about any water getting in
- Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive

Advice
Common questions in Catterline
Can you help a landlord with a rental near Stonehaven station?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for, and several properties can be quoted together. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the address and what needs doing, and we’ll give you a clear quote.
Will you come out to Catterline?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Can you strip sealant from an acrylic tray safely?
Yes, with care. The old bead is cut and lifted with tools that suit the surface, then clean off the residue. Any existing damage is pointed out before any work starts.
Do you do commercial work?
Yes, regularly. We can plan bigger jobs in stages.
How long does remedial resealing take?
It takes a few hours for a typical bath or shower, longer where several layers have been applied. We will give you a timescale when we quote.
Is it worth trying it myself?
That depends on the joint. Work at height, movement joints, fire-rated gaps and large areas are best left to a professional.
How long should I leave it?
It depends on the product and the temperature. Before we leave, we’ll tell you the cure time.
What do you need from me for a quote?
A short description and the location, plus photos if you have them. If we need more, we will ask.

Different surfaces, different methods
Windows & doors
A frame that keeps leaking may not be the mastic. If the frame joint is not the cause, we will say so.
Mouldy bath & shower sealant
Mould often spreads under the bead as well as through it. Once it’s all removed, the joint is treated.
