Remedial sealant in Crimond

Remedial sealant in Crimond, done properly

Remedial work is what we do when sealant has failed or been done badly. New sealant over old, smeared beads, unsuitable products and hidden mould all need stripping out. We work on failed movement joints, mouldy bath & shower sealant and leaking tray & enclosure joints, and common reasons people get in touch are mould trapped under a layer of silicone and gaps opening along the back of the worktop.

Being further from a city does not change the work: old material out, joints cleaned and dried, and a fresh, even finish. The journey and access are simply planned in advance.

All our work comes with our 12-month guarantee.

Looking after it afterwards

After the cure time, these simple habits help:

  • Don’t add new sealant on top of old
  • Deal with small splits early
  • Air the bathroom so the sealant can dry
  • Find out why the sealant failed first

If we have found a cause, such as a loose tray or a leaking waste, get it fixed, or the new joint may fail again.

A failing joint rarely gets better on its own. Each use pushes more water behind the bead, into whatever is behind or below. Sorting it early limits the damage.

What we do, step by step

When we get to you, we check the joints match what you told us. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. Most jobs then take a few hours for a typical bath or shower, longer where several layers have been applied. Outdoor work around Crimond depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We protect the surfaces around the joint.
  2. The botched or failed sealant is cut away completely.
  3. We clean and degrease the joint and look for signs of movement or water.
  4. Once dry, a suitable sealant is applied and tooled.
  5. We give you the cure time and explain what caused the failure.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored near the joints
  • Tell us if parking is tricky
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can

Advice

What remedial sealant looks like in Crimond

Crimond is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that doesn’t dry out.

Around Crimond, as everywhere, remedial sealant is only as good as the preparation behind it. In the older streets around Crimond Church, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.

Crimond is about 7 miles south-east of Fraserburgh, in Aberdeenshire. Crimond gets the same service as everywhere we cover: the old material taken out, joints prepared properly and a 12-month guarantee. Our area takes in 161 places across Aberdeenshire, large and small. You can also see our page for Aberdeen, roughly 32 miles from Crimond.

What we can’t put right

We’d rather tell you now than do work that will not last, so here’s what sealant can’t put right:

  • Failed tanking or loose tiles behind the sealant
  • Sealant in an older building that needs testing for asbestos first
  • A leaking trap, valve or supply pipe

If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.

Surfaces we seal

  • Mouldy bath & shower sealant
  • Expansion joints
  • Failed movement joints
  • Botched or over-sealed joints
  • Shrunken worktop sealant
  • Leaking tray & enclosure joints

Surface by surface

Windows & doors

Frames resealed over the top end up with hard, layered mastic. All of it is cut out and the frame and wall cleaned.

Movement & expansion joints

Joints filled with mortar, grout or rigid filler cannot move. Where it can be raked out, we replace it with flexible sealant.

What affects the cost of remedial sealant

Call for a quick quote. The main things that affect it are:

  • How many areas need sealing
  • The product the joint needs
  • The amount of work
  • When we can work, for business premises

The cost reflects the work involved, not guesswork. That is why we ask a few questions first and give you a clear price before we start.

Helping us quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in contact, it helps to mention:

  • The type of property
  • Photos by email, if that is easy
  • If someone has resealed it before
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs

It all starts with a short chat. Tell us what’s wrong, where it is and how much there is. When it suits you, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Why act early in Crimond

Ripping out a bathroom is not normally needed. If the bath, tray and tiles are sound, remedial resealing usually puts it right. Where something else has failed, you’ll hear it from us. In an older home around Crimond, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, because water and mould keep working on it. If you’re unsure, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Crimond questions

Do you cover Crimond for remedial sealant?

Yes, Crimond is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

Is remedial sealant in Crimond guaranteed?

All our work, in Crimond and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes, always, and completely. New sealant won’t bond properly to old, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.

Do I need to be at home?

It depends on the job. Inside work needs someone to give us access, while outside work can sometimes be arranged differently.

Are you insured?

Yes, we’re fully insured for domestic and commercial work.

Will there be a smell?

Some sealants have a smell while they cure, but it fades. Opening a window helps.

Are you an approved applicator?

Yes. Mr Mastic is an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Can you remove sealant that is been put over old sealant?

Yes. Stripping layered sealant takes longer than a normal reseal, but it’s what makes the new bead last.

DIY versus a professional finish

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.
