Regrouting in Perth and Kinross: how it works

A grout colour change can freshen a room without retiling. Light grout can go darker to hide marks or back again. Just mention the colour you’d like when you drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk. Common call-outs are for splashback grout that has darkened and stained grout that cleaning won’t shift, on wet rooms, tiled floors and kitchen splashbacks.

At the end, we look at the finished work together and explain the cure time. The work normally takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room, depending on how much there is to do.

  1. Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
  2. The old grout is removed to an even depth.
  3. The joints are vacuumed clean.
  4. We regrout the joints and clean the tile faces.
  5. We finish with silicone in the moving joints.

What you’ll pay

Leaving a failed joint generally makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re not sure whether it needs doing, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Regrouting across Perth and Kinross: local notes

Our regrouting work across Perth and Kinross covers homes, rentals and businesses, from Perth, Blairgowrie and Rattray and Crieff to the quieter places in between. The method is the same everywhere: old material cut out, joints cleaned and dried, and a fresh finish laid.

Homes in Scotland come with their own details: sash and case windows, harled walls and, in the towns and cities, tenement flats. Perth and Kinross is part of the area we cover across Scotland. Parts of Perth and Kinross are on or near the coast, where wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt air are hard on outside sealant. Joints on seaward walls tend to fail first.

Perth: If you look after a building such as Perth High School, its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s. If you let a flat or house near Perth station, clean grout and fresh sealant between tenancies make a bathroom look cared for again.

Why it fails

Movement behind the tiles cracks grout. That can be a loose tile, a flexing floor or a stud wall, so we check the tiles before any work starts.

Look out for these signs:

  • Grout in corners that has cracked
  • Crumbling grout between the tiles
  • Stained grout that cleaning won’t shift
  • Shower grout that has worn away

What affects the quote in Perth and Kinross

For a quick quote, just ask. The main things that affect it are:

  • Any working-time requirements on site
  • How much there is to do
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • The type of sealant required

Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: the amount of work, the access and the products needed, plus any working-time requirements on site. Ask us for a quote and we will explain what it covers.

Asking for a quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • How we’d reach the joints
  • Where the property is
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • Whether it’s a home or a business

Every job is quoted individually. Simply send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and describe the job, and photos are welcome.

How the job changes by surface

Corners and edges

Internal corners move, so we seal them rather than grout them.

Wet rooms

In a wet room, the whole floor gets wet, so sound grout really matters. We check the tiles first.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. Our advice:

  • Don’t ignore a tile that feels loose
  • Skip wire brushes and scourers
  • Clean grout with a mild bathroom cleaner
  • Run the extractor fan during and after a shower

Give the new grout the time we tell you before using the shower, so it cures fully. From then on, a quick rinse after showering helps and keep the room ventilated.

Cracked grout does not stay cracked for long. Water gets behind the tiles, and they can begin to come away, so regrouting early can save a retile.

What happens if it’s left?

Regrouting won’t help where tiles have come away. We will tell you before we start, so you can decide what to do. On sound tiles, regrouting avoids the upheaval of a retile.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How hidden problems are handled
  • How the joint is cleaned and prepared
  • Who turns up on the day
  • What the quote includes, VAT included or not

Perth and Kinross: your questions answered

Which products do you use?

It depends on the joint: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. We use products from Arbo and Everbuild.

How long should I wait before showering?

Before we leave, we’ll tell you how long to wait. The grout and sealant both need to cure before they get wet.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Yes. Sealing over the old bead is the commonest cause of early failure, and it’s something we never do.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Of course. Doing several areas at once is generally more efficient, so mention them when you ask for a quote.

How long will you be here?

It depends on the size of the job, but most jobs take a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. We will tell you when we quote.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. Full insurance covers our work.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, and we never do. It may look fine at first, but the new bead soon lifts. The old sealant has to come out completely.
