How regrouting works in the Scottish Borders
We take the old grout out to a consistent depth, without damaging the edges of the tiles. After vacuuming, new grout goes in and the tiles are wiped clean, with silicone renewed in the corners. We work on shower walls, kitchen splashbacks and tiled floors, and the jobs we see most are grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned and floor grout that won’t come clean.
At the end, we look at the finished work together and explain the cure time. The visit itself generally takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room, depending on the size of the job.
- We agree the area to be regrouted and point out any loose tiles.
- Grout is raked out without chipping the tiles.
- The joints are cleaned out and vacuumed.
- We grout the joints and wipe the tiles clean.
- Internal corners and edges are resealed.

Near you in Galashiels
Typical jobs here are in homes near Galashiels, Public House and Galashiels Academy and the streets around them. Galashiels has its own railway station: Galashiels station. Other landmarks nearby include Borders General Hospital (2.7 miles south-east) and Castle Holydean (4.4 miles south-east). Open spaces near Galashiels include Eildon Mid Hill.
Bathrooms and kitchens across the Scottish Borders
From Galashiels, Hawick and Peebles to its smaller places, homes across the Scottish Borders have bathrooms and kitchens of every age. Sealant and grout wear out in all of them, whether it’s a family bathroom, a rented flat or a hotel en suite.
We work across all of Scotland, from the cities to the islands, and the Scottish Borders is part of that. Journeys are planned ahead, and outside jobs are booked around the forecast. In the coastal parts of the Scottish Borders, the sea-facing side of a building takes the most weather, and that’s where sealant normally gives up first. Good preparation and the right sealant help it cope.
Galashiels: Schools such as Galashiels Academy are buildings too, and washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes. Rented homes near Galashiels station change hands often, and a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant.
When it is not the sealant
We won’t take on work that won’t last, so here’s what sealant can’t put right:
- A floor or wall that keeps moving
- Water coming from plumbing rather than grout
- Loose tiles, which need refixing first
Leave it or put it right?
With regrouting, your tiles stay where they are. Retiling is a much bigger job: stripping, making good, new tiles and new grout, and the room is out of use for longer. If the tiles are sound, regrouting is the simpler fix.
What your quote should include
- The length of the guarantee
- Which colour the sealant will be
- What the quote includes, VAT included or not
- When the joint can take water or movement
Can I do it myself?
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.
The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions.
Aftercare tips
To keep the joints looking good and working properly:
- Rinse the tiles after showering
- Check the corner silicone every few months
- Keep harsh bleach and acid cleaners off the grout
- Stick to mild products for cleaning grout
A squeegee or cloth over the tiles after use stops soap and water sitting on the grout. Ventilate the room well so the grout dries between uses.
If grout in the shower is washing out, act soon. Each shower drives water into the open joints, and that water can reach the wall or the floor below.
How we quote for regrouting
For a quick quote, just ask. The main things that affect it are:
- Any mould that needs treating
- Any working-time requirements on site
- How many areas need sealing
- The number and length of the joints
Some things make a job bigger or smaller: the old material and how easily it comes out, whether mould needs treating, and whether we need extra access for height. Your quote takes all of that into account.
Helping us quote
To help us quote quickly, please include:
- The type of property
- If someone has resealed it before
- Roughly how big the job is
- Where the property is
A good description makes for an accurate quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints.
Questions from the Scottish Borders
Should I try DIY first?
For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. Full insurance covers our work, and we can confirm the details when we quote.
Can landlords and businesses book you?
Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels in the Scottish Borders.
Can you regrout if a few tiles are loose?
Loose or hollow tiles are a sign of a problem behind them. Regrouting alone is not the answer, and we’ll tell you before any work starts.
Is regrouting a chance to pick a new grout colour?
Yes, plenty of people choose to. A darker grout hides marks better, while lighter grout brightens a room.
Do you do commercial work?
Yes. Commercial and hotel work is a large part of what we do, as well as homes. We can talk about working times when we quote.
Should corners be grouted or sealed?
Internal corners and edges are sealed with flexible silicone. Grout in a moving joint soon cracks.
