Regrouting in Sprouston

Grout fills the gaps between tiles, and sealant is what goes along the bath, tray or worktop. Once grout starts to crack or wash away, water has a way in behind the tiling. Our job is to rake it out and put new grout in and renew the silicone at the edges. If you have corners filled with grout instead of silicone and greasy, stained grout behind the hob, we can put it right, on wet rooms, shower walls and bathroom floors alike.

For a place like Sprouston, the job is the same as anywhere: old material out, joints cleaned and dried, and a fresh, even finish. We just plan the journey and access beforehand.

We guarantee the work for a year. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we’ll sort it.

What affects the quote in Sprouston

Your quote is based on your job. We look at:

  • Access and height
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • When we can work, for business premises
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out

We do not show prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a quick quote, please email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Helping us quote

Photos help, but a description is a good start. Try to tell us:

  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • Photos by email, if that is easy
  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • The rough size of the job

To get a quote, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the location and a short description of the problem. You will have a clear quote before we start.

Looking after it afterwards

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Get any tile that moves checked promptly
  • Look at the sealant in the corners now and then
  • Give the walls a quick rinse after use
  • Use gentle cleaners on grout

Before we leave, you’ll know when the shower can be used. Please follow it, and go gently on the grout at first.

Once grout cracks, it tends to get worse. Water gets in behind and the tiles can start to loosen and early regrouting can avoid a much bigger job.

What happens if it’s left?

If tiles are loose, regrouting alone is not the answer. We point that out first so you know what’s involved. Where the tiles are sound, regrouting is far less disruptive than retiling. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: how much there is to do, how we reach it and what it needs, plus any working-time requirements on site. Call for a quick quote and we’ll go through it with you.

What the job involves on each surface

Bathroom floors

New floor grout makes a big difference to how a bathroom looks. The edges where floor meets wall or bath get silicone.

Shower walls

Shower walls are the most common area we regrout. Gaps here let water get behind the tiling.

Regrouting around Sprouston

Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that doesn’t dry out. Private landlords in Scotland must be registered and meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Tired, leaking sealant is worth putting right before a new tenant moves in.

For an older house near a landmark such as Sprouston Parish Church, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

Signs you need regrouting in Sprouston

Movement behind the tiles cracks grout. That can be a loose tile, a flexing floor or a stud wall, which is why we check the tiles first.

Most people get in touch when they notice something like this:

  • Greasy, stained grout behind the hob
  • Cracked or crumbling grout lines
  • Old grout in a dated colour
  • Cracked grout along the bath or tray

Schools such as Kelso High School are buildings too, and its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s.

What your quote should include

  • How the surfaces are prepared before sealing
  • How much experience the applicator has
  • Is VAT in the price?
  • Whether they seal over old material or remove it

How the visit works

When we arrive, we start by going over the job with you, so there are no surprises. Surfaces next to the work are protected before we start. The work generally takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. Around Sprouston, distance and access matter more than parking. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
  2. We rake out the grout evenly, protecting the tile edges.
  3. The joints are vacuumed clean.
  4. New grout is pressed into the joints and the tiles are cleaned.
  5. Silicone goes into the corners and along the edges.

How to prepare

  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed

Can I do it myself?

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is.
