How we handle regrouting in Stow

Across Stow, we regrout tiled showers, bathrooms and kitchens. Out comes the old grout, the joints are cleaned and new grout goes in, finished with new silicone at the edges. We work on bathroom wall tiles, tiled floors and kitchen splashbacks, and people most often call us about greasy, stained grout behind the hob and grout stained black or orange that won’t clean.

In and around a place like Stow, homes range from older stone-built properties to newer houses. Where a building moves, cracked grout and split sealant are usually the first signs.

Our work is backed for twelve months.

When something else is needed

We won’t take on work that won’t last, so these are the limits:

  • Tiles that are loose or hollow behind
  • Water coming from plumbing rather than grout
  • A leaking wet room membrane

If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think.

How it works

When we arrive, we look over the joints with you first. Surfaces next to the work are protected before we start. The work usually takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. Outdoor work around Stow depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. First, we check for loose or hollow tiles and point out any we find.
  2. The old grout comes out to a consistent depth, without damaging the tiles.
  3. The joints are vacuumed and cleaned.
  4. Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
  5. Corners and edges are resealed with flexible silicone, not grout.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any tricky access
  • Keep children and pets away from the work area
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints

When to call us in Stow

Grout is porous, so it soaks up water, soap and dirt. Given time, it discolours and begins to break down, especially in a shower that’s used every day.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • A grout colour that no longer suits the room
  • Gaps where the shower grout has gone
  • Corners filled with grout instead of silicone
  • Cracked or crumbling grout lines

Letting a property close to Stow station? Then a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant.

Aftercare tips

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Do not ignore a tile that feels loose
  • Use gentle cleaners on grout
  • Wipe water off the walls when you’re done
  • Rinse soap off the tiles after each shower

We will tell you when the area can be used again. Please follow it, and go gently on the grout at first.

Leaving failed grout can mean tiles come loose. By then, new grout alone isn’t enough so early action pays.

Stow: your questions answered

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Stow station?

Yes. We work for landlords and letting agents as well as householders. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the address and what needs doing, and we will give you a clear quote.

Will you come out to Stow?

Yes, Stow is covered. We work across all of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Will regrouting fix loose tiles?

Tiles that have come away need sorting first. We’ll point them out before any grout comes out.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes, we can. More than one area can go on one quote.

Do you grout the corners?

Internal corners and edges are sealed with flexible silicone. Grout in a moving joint soon cracks.

Can I do it myself?

Some simple jobs can be done by a careful DIYer. The usual mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using too much.

Is it messy?

No. We protect the surfaces around the joints, and we tidy up before we go.

Do you guarantee regrouting?

Every job comes with our one-year guarantee.

Regrouting in Stow: local notes

Private landlords in Scotland must be registered and meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that does not dry out.

For an older house near a landmark such as St Mary's Church, timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them.

How the job changes by surface

Shower walls

Shower walls get wet every day, so grout there works hardest. It’s often the first place grout washes out.

Bathroom wall tiles

Whole bathroom walls can be regrouted in one visit or more, depending on the area. You can change the colour at the same time.

Why deal with it now?

If tiles are loose, regrouting alone is not the answer. We will tell you before work begins so you know what’s involved. On sound tiles, regrouting avoids the upheaval of a retile. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

The cost reflects the work involved, not a rough estimate. That’s why we ask about the job first.
