How we handle regrouting in Gavinton

If you’ve been scrubbing grout that won’t come clean, the discolouration has usually soaked into the grout. Replacing it is the lasting answer and you can pick a different colour while you’re at it. We work on wet rooms, bathroom wall tiles and tiled floors, and the jobs we see most are grout stained black or orange that won’t clean and greasy, stained grout behind the hob.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Gavinton work just as hard as those in the cities. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.

You get a one-year guarantee, the same in Gavinton as everywhere else we work.

How to look after the new joints

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Run the extractor fan during and after a shower
  • Give the walls a quick rinse after use
  • Check the corner silicone every few months
  • Have loose tiles looked at early

A squeegee or cloth over the tiles after use keeps water off the grout. Run the extractor fan or open a window to help it dry out.

Once grout cracks, it tends to get worse. Water gets in behind and the tiles can start to loosen, so regrouting early can save a retile.

What affects the quote in Gavinton

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • The number and length of the joints
  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • Mould in or behind the old joints

Combining jobs into one visit is generally more efficient than separate visits, so tell us about everything that needs sealing. We will give you a clear quote for the lot.

What to tell us for a quote

To make quoting easier, let us know:

  • Roughly how big the job is
  • A few photos by email, if you can
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • Whether it’s a home or a business

Asking for a quote is easy: let us know what needs doing and where. Photos by email help us understand the job, and we will take it from there.

What we cannot put right

We’ll always be straight with you, so here’s what sealant cannot fix:

  • Failed tanking or waterproofing under the tiles
  • Leaks from pipes, valves or wastes (a plumber’s job)
  • A floor or wall that keeps moving

If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think.

What we seal

  • Tiled floors
  • Wet rooms
  • Kitchen splashbacks
  • Bathroom wall tiles
  • Bathroom floors
  • Shower walls

Can I do it myself?

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We cut it out and start again, so just mention it when you contact us.

Your questions about regrouting in Gavinton

Do you work for hotels and guest houses in Gavinton?

Yes, we work for hotels as well as homes and businesses. Rooms can be done a few at a time, so the building stays open.

Do you cover Gavinton for regrouting?

Yes, Gavinton is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.

Are you insured?

Yes. We’re fully insured, with over 20 years’ experience in sealant work.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Yes. Several rooms, windows or areas can go on one quote.

Do you regrout part of a bathroom, like the shower?

Yes. Many jobs are just the shower walls, or the area where the grout has gone.

What does regrouting cost?

Size, access and the old material all affect the cost. Ask us for a quote and we’ll talk you through it.

How long will you be here?

A typical job takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Your quote will say how long we expect yours to take.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, and we never do. It may look fine at first, but the new layer lifts away from the old one. Removing the old sealant completely is the only lasting way.

Common problems we fix in Gavinton

When tiles or the wall behind them move, the grout cracks. Loose tiles, bouncy floors and timber walls can all do it, so we check the tiles before any work starts.

Most people get in touch when they notice something like this:

  • Cracked grout along the bath or tray
  • Shower grout that has worn away
  • Grout in a colour the owner wants to change
  • Good tiles let down by tired grout

In the older streets around Gavinton Parish Church and Churchyard, timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them.

Before booking anyone

  • Whether all the old sealant comes out first
  • When the joint can take water or movement
  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • How much experience the applicator has

Our hiring checklist

What happens on the day

The work is kept neat and contained to the joints we’re treating. The job normally takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. Outside jobs in Gavinton need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. First we agree what’s being done and flag any loose tiles.
  2. Grout is raked out without chipping the tiles.
  3. The joints are cleaned out and vacuumed.
  4. We grout the joints and wipe the tiles clean.
  5. We renew the silicone at the corners and edges.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep children and pets away from the work area
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks
  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints

How to get a quote

The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is, and email photos if that is easy.

How the job changes by surface

Kitchen splashbacks

The grout by the hob and sink takes most of the mess. We regroute and reseal the worktop joint.

Bathroom floors

Floor grout takes foot traffic as well as water. It wears and darkens over time.
