Remedial Sealant in East Sussex

How remedial sealant works in East Sussex

In East Sussex, as anywhere, remedial jobs tend to look alike: over-sealed joints, hidden mould, repeat leaks and split movement joints. We strip each one back and start from scratch. We work on shrunken worktop sealant, mouldy bath & shower sealant and expansion joints, and common reasons people get in touch are movement joints that have split or pulled away and repeat leaks from the same joint.

We keep the work tidy and contained to the area we’re working on, so you can get on with your day. Expect the work to take a few hours for a typical bath or shower, longer where several layers have been applied, and we tell you how long to leave it before we go.

  1. Surrounding tiles, trays and frames are protected first.
  2. Every layer of failed sealant is stripped out.
  3. The joint is degreased and checked for movement and leaks.
  4. Once dry, a suitable sealant is applied and tooled.
  5. We give you the cure time and explain what caused the failure.

Where we work in East Sussex

Homes across East Sussex range from older properties to new builds, and in places like Eastbourne, Hastings and Bexhill-on-Sea there’s plenty of rented property too. Remedial sealant keeps bathrooms and kitchens watertight and looking cared for.

Most of the South East has hard water, so limescale builds up on sealant, grout and fittings. Whatever the job in East Sussex, surfaces are cleaned back properly before new sealant goes in. Coastal guest houses and holiday lets in East Sussex can see heavy use in busy months, which is hard on sealant and grout.

Eastbourne: Rented homes near Hampden Park station change hands often, and a joint that keeps failing is best fixed properly while the property is empty. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Stafford Junior School, its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s.

Honest limits

Before booking, it’s worth knowing the limits too:

  • Plumbing leaks behind walls or under trays
  • Movement from fittings that aren’t supported
  • Water damage behind tiles that needs a tiler

How the job changes by surface

Leaking trays & enclosures

If the tray is cracked, or the leak is from the valve or waste, sealant won’t fix it. We say so rather than reseal.

Windows & doors

Smeared or badly matched mastic can be cut out and redone neatly, matched to the frame colour.

Aftercare tips

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Keep an eye on the ceiling below the bathroom
  • Never fill a movement joint with mortar or grout
  • Clean sealant with mild products only
  • Don’t add new sealant on top of old

Watch the joint over the first few weeks, especially if movement was the problem. Should anything change, call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email.

Mould trapped under over-sealed joints spreads unseen. By the time it shows through, the joint is well past saving.

You’ll get a clear quote before any work starts. It takes into account:

  • Working hours on commercial sites

What we need to know

Photos by email are helpful but not essential. Please mention:

  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • Where the property is
  • Roughly how big the job is

Every job is quoted individually, so the first step is telling us about yours. Just call 0345 464 0079 or email us with the details.

Should I try it myself first?

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

East Sussex: your questions answered

Do I have to be there?

For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. After that, you can carry on with your day.

How long should I leave it?

Many sealants skin over quickly but take longer to cure fully. We’ll give you the cure time for the product we used.

What if the leak isn’t the sealant?

We will tell you. If it’s a cracked tray, a failed valve or a leaking waste, resealing will not fix it, and we won’t reseal for the sake of it.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes, and it often makes sense. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit.

Someone sealed over the old bead. Can you fix it?

Yes. We remove every layer; over-sealing fails because silicone won’t bond to silicone.

Can failed expansion joints be resealed?

Yes. If a joint has been filled with mortar or rigid filler, we rake it out where possible, and reseal with a flexible product.

What information do you need?

Only a few details: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. After that, simply ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email.
