About external mastic in the Isle of Wight
We cut out failed sealant, set the joint depth with closed-cell backing rod and reseal with a low-modulus exterior sealant. We pick a colour that sits well with the wall. We are often asked to deal with joints pointed up with cement by mistake and old sealant gone brittle and cracked, on façade panels, render & cladding joints and joints between brick and frames.
When we get to you, we check the joints match what you told us. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. After that, the work takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access.
- We look at every joint and agree a colour to suit the wall.
- Failed sealant is removed back to clean, sound faces.
- Closed-cell backing rod is pushed in so the sealant bonds to two sides only.
- We prime the faces where required.
- A low-modulus exterior sealant is gunned in and tooled to a neat finish.

Walls and rooflines across the Isle of Wight
Our external mastic work across the Isle of Wight covers homes, blocks and business premises, from Newport, Ryde and Cowes to the quieter places in between. Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so the work is planned around the weather.
London and the South East are among the drier parts of the UK, but outdoor sealant still needs a dry day and clean surfaces, so outside work in the Isle of Wight is planned around the forecast. Parts of the Isle of Wight are on or near the coast, where wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt air are hard on outside sealant. Walls facing the sea are usually the first to need attention.
Newport: Carisbrooke Castle, about 1 mile south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Newport. If you look after a building such as Nine Acres Primary School, its movement joints, gutters and trims need looking after like any other building’s.
How the job changes by surface
Copings and trims
Metal and stone copings both move with temperature, so the joints need a sealant that stays flexible in all weathers.
Joints between dissimilar materials
Wherever two materials meet, they move differently. A flexible sealant bridges the two so neither cracks the other.
Keeping the joints in good condition
Aftercare is simple:
- Have failed joints looked at early
- Make sure movement joints are not pointed over
- Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter
- Tell anyone working on the walls about the movement joints
Do not paint over the new sealant unless we have said the product is paintable. Many exterior sealants aren’t designed to be painted.
If you can see gaps, plants or bare sections in a joint, have it checked. Earlier resealing means a smaller job and a better result.
Why act early?
Done well, a resealed joint is a neat, straight line that suits the wall. A rushed bead with no backing looks untidy and doesn’t last.

DIY versus a professional finish
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
A DIY attempt does not rule out a professional job. We remove it and do the joint properly, so just mention it when you contact us.
Why it fails
Using the wrong sealant is another common reason. A stiff, general-purpose sealant cannot cope with a joint that moves a lot, so it pulls away from the edges.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
- Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
- Weeds or debris growing in open joints
- Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
Questions from the Isle of Wight
How long does the job take?
As a guide, most jobs take anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. Larger jobs naturally take longer, and we will say how long yours will take.
What does external mastic cost?
There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: its size, the old material, access and the product needed. We agree the price before any work begins.
What do you put in the joint?
We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference, and we will explain our choice.
Do I have to be there?
If the work is inside, we need someone to let us in. After that, you can carry on with your day.
Can you quote for more than one area?
Yes. Tell us about everything you’d like done and we will quote it together.
Will there be a smell?
It depends on the product. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all.
What should I tell you?
A short description and the location. We will ask anything else we need to know.
