Gutter sealing in the Isle of Wight: how it works
For gutter sealant to hold, the joint has to be clean and dry. That’s why we take out the old sealant and dirt first, then dry the joint before sealing. Common call-outs are for streaks down the brickwork from a leaking joint and internal damp traced to a gutter joint, across garage door frames, uPVC fascias and gutter end caps.
We work through the job in order: protect, prepare, seal, tidy. Typically it takes an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run, and the area is left clean.
- We find where the water is coming from and check the gutter is sound.
- We remove the old sealant and clean the joint.
- We dry the joint so the new sealant can bond.
- A gutter sealant is applied to the joint.
- We check the run and clear debris near the joints.

What’s near Newport
Typical jobs here are in homes near Seaclose Park, Castle Inn and Island Innovation VI Form Campus, among other places. Other local landmarks include Christ The King College (0.6 miles south-west) and Nine Acres Primary School (within half a mile south). A little further out are Carisbrooke Castle (1 mile south-west) and St Mary's Hospital (0.8 miles north). The countryside around Newport includes Briddlesford Nature Reserve and Mill Hill.
Walls and rooflines across the Isle of Wight
Across the Isle of Wight, from Newport, Ryde and Cowes outwards, outside joints range from old gutters to modern movement joints. All of them move, so they need a flexible sealant at the right depth.
The South East is one of the drier parts of the UK, though outside sealant still needs a dry, clean joint, so work across the Isle of Wight is planned around the weather. Coastal guest houses and holiday lets in the Isle of Wight can see heavy use in busy months, so their sealant and grout wear faster than most.
Newport: Managing a site like Nine Acres Primary School? Then movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s. Carisbrooke Castle, about 1 mile south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Newport, and older homes nearby need a sealant that suits their walls.
Landlord and commercial work in the Isle of Wight
Letting agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the address, the job and how access works.
In hotels, rooms out of use cost money, so the work can be planned room by room. We have worked in hotels as well as homes and businesses.
Why it fails
When a gutter sags, its joints open. Sealing won’t hold if the gutter keeps dropping so the brackets need attention first.
Common reasons people contact us include:
- Dripping gutter ends
- Damp on an inside wall under a dripping gutter
- Failed sealant on a garage door frame
- Leaking gutter joints and stop ends
Can I do it myself?
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.
Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.
Different surfaces, different methods
Garage door frames
Failed sealant around a garage door frame lets water in. It’s removed and renewed.
Roofline trims
Trims along the roofline are often finished with sealant. Split sealant lets water in.
Why act early?
If the problem is a blocked downpipe, sealing won’t help. We look at what’s really happening and point you to the right trade if needed.
What your quote should include
- What insurance they hold
- Whether VAT is included
- Whether the sealant suits the joint
- How long the guarantee is
Common questions in the Isle of Wight
Where do you work from?
Our base is in Crawley, and we work across South East England, London and Scotland.
Is gutter cleaning part of the job?
We clear debris around the joints we’re sealing. A full clean of the gutters isn’t part of it.
What guarantee comes with the job?
There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job.
Do you offer different sealant colours?
Most of the time, yes. We will explain which colours are available and agree one before we start.
What do you put in the joint?
Quality sealants from brands including Arbo and Everbuild, chosen to suit the joint. We’ll tell you what we are using and why.
Will you leave a mess?
We keep the work tidy. We protect what’s around the joints, and the area is left clean when we finish.
Does someone need to be in?
Access is agreed with you when the job is booked. For inside work, that normally means someone being in.
