Soffit joints

Soffits sit under the eaves, where joints can open up. We seal them to close the gaps.

Gutter end caps

We seal end caps from the inside where we can reach once clean and dry.

Gutter sealing in Shanklin

Many dripping gutters are just a failed joint or end cap. We clean out the joint, dry it and reseal it with a sealant made for guttering. If the gutter is broken or sagging, we’ll tell you. We work on roofline trims, gutter joints and soffit joints, and the jobs we see most are end caps that drip every time it rains and gaps along fascia and soffit joints.

In and around Shanklin, older properties sit alongside newer ones, each with its own outside joints. Older homes need their gutter and trim joints kept tight, newer ones their movement joints.

All our work is covered by a one-year guarantee.

What affects the cost of gutter sealing

We don’t publish a price list. The quote depends on:

  • How many areas need sealing
  • How easy the joints are to reach
  • The old material and how stubborn it is
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with

What you pay reflects the work, not a rough estimate. That’s why we ask about the job first.

Asking for a quote

Before you ask for a quote, have a think about:

  • The problem you’ve noticed
  • A few photos by email, if you can
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel

Quotes start with a quick conversation. Describe the problem, the location and the size of the job, and we’ll talk you through what we’d do. When it suits you, ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email.

Gutter sealing in Shanklin: local notes

Shanklin is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. London and the South East are among the drier parts of the UK, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind.

If you live in an older home near St. Paul's Church, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain. Rented homes near Shanklin station change hands often, and a gutter joint that drips onto the wall can turn into a damp complaint, so it’s worth checking.

Shanklin is about 6 miles south of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Jobs in Shanklin get the same care as everywhere else we work: the old material taken out, joints prepared properly and a 12-month guarantee. Our area takes in 125 places across the Isle of Wight. For nearby work, see our Portsmouth page, about 13 miles away.

Work in PO37 and PO36 is quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Whether your property is on High Street, Church Road and Regent Street or a nearby road, our applicators can take on the job. Close by, we work in Luccombe Village (1 mile south), Lake (1 mile north), Sandown (2 miles north-east), Queen's Bower (2 miles north) and Alverstone (2 miles north). Further out, we also cover Newport (7 miles north-west), Ryde (6 miles north), Cowes (10 miles north-west), Ventnor (3 miles south-west), East Cowes (10 miles north-west) and Oakfield (6 miles north). Being one of the Isle of Wight’s larger places, Shanklin has every kind of property, from flats to offices. If you’re somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed.

Aftercare tips

Looking after new joints is easy, and it makes a real difference:

  • Watch the wall under the gutters for staining
  • Rest ladders on the wall, not the gutter
  • Glance at the soffit joints now and then
  • Sort out a dripping joint early

If a gutter starts to sag, get the brackets looked at. If it drops, the joints will open.

Once roofline sealant splits, water can get behind it. Sealing it early keeps the boards behind dry and the wall below.

When something else is needed

In fairness, some problems need a different trade:

  • Gutters that have dropped or pulled away
  • Fascias that need replacing
  • A gutter length that has split

If in doubt, call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.

Can I do it myself?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone will not bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.

Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs need the right product, the right access and the right method.

Questions from Shanklin

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Shanklin station?

Yes, we work for letting agents and landlords. Just phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and tell us about the property, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

Is gutter sealing in a coastal place like Shanklin any different?

Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. The right product, a clean joint and the right depth all help it cope.

How long before the joint can be used?

Different products cure at different speeds, so please follow the time we give you when we finish.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes. We have worked for hotels, offices and other businesses.

Is it worth trying it myself?

Sometimes. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.

Is sealing fascia joints something you do?

Yes, often alongside gutter joints. Each joint is cleaned and sealed.

What do you need from me for a quote?

The location, the problem and the rough size of the job. If you can, email a few photos.

Can new sealant go over the old?

No. New silicone will not bond to old silicone, and it traps any mould or water underneath. It all has to come out first.

Do you need gutter sealing in Shanklin?

Sagging sections pull joints apart. Sealing won’t hold if the gutter keeps dropping, so the gutter needs refixing first.

People usually contact us when they notice one of these:

  • Damp patches inside below a leaking gutter
  • Open joints in fascias and soffits
  • Dripping gutter ends
  • Garage door frames letting rain in

Schools such as St Blasius Shanklin CofE Primary Academy are buildings too, and its movement joints, gutters and trims need looking after like any other building’s.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Which sealant they’ll use, and why
  • How long the guarantee is
  • What the cure time is
  • Are they insured?

Choosing a sealant specialist

The process

All our tools and materials come with us in the van. Once we have agreed what’s being done, we protect the area and start. It normally takes anything from an hour or two to a few hours. In a smaller place like Shanklin, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. For outside work, side access and the height of the joints help us plan.

  1. First we trace the drip and check the gutter isn’t damaged.
  2. We remove the old sealant and clean the joint.
  3. We dry the joint so the new sealant can bond.
  4. We seal the joint with a sealant made for gutters.
  5. We check the run and clear debris near the joints.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about any water getting in
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on
