Need external mastic in Marsh Green?

Marsh Green questions

Does the coastal weather in Marsh Green affect outside sealant?

Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.

Is Marsh Green in your area for external mastic?

Yes. We work across London and the South East, and Marsh Green is part of that. Just call 0345 464 0079 or email us with a few details of the job.

Will there be a smell?

Some sealants have a smell while they cure. Opening a window helps.

Should I point up the gap in my brickwork?

No. Mortar locks the joint solid, so the wall cracks somewhere else instead. Use a flexible sealant with backing rod.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes. All of the old material is cut out and the joint cleaned before resealing.

Can I do it myself?

Sometimes. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. If it doesn’t work out, we can redo it.

Do you use backing rod?

Backing rod controls the sealant depth and keeps it off the back of the joint. Then the sealant bonds to two faces and can move.

Does someone need to be in?

Access is agreed with you when the job is booked. Indoors, that usually means someone at home.

About our external mastic in Marsh Green

A movement joint is only as good as its depth. Backing rod controls how deep the sealant goes and keeps it off the back of the joint, leaving it bonded to two faces so it can move with the wall. Typical jobs include weeds or debris growing in open joints and joints where the bead has come unstuck, on joints between brick and frames, façade panels and render & cladding joints.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Marsh Green is booked around the forecast. Tell us about access to all sides of the building, including outbuildings and garages.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please ring 0345 464 0079 or email us.

What we can’t put right

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • Cutting new joints into brickwork, which is building work rather than sealant work
  • Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
  • Failed render or damaged cladding panels

If you’re not sure, just ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

What we seal

  • Render & cladding joints
  • Concrete & block
  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Façade panels
  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Copings & trims

The process

Most of a good job is in the preparation, so that’s where we spend the time. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. All told, the work takes a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation. For a village or hamlet like Marsh Green, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. Everything for the job comes with us, so a second trip is avoided where possible.

  1. We start by checking each joint, agreeing the ones to redo and how we’ll reach them.
  2. We cut out the failed sealant and rake out any dirt or growth.
  3. The joint faces are cleaned and primed where the sealant needs it.
  4. We push in closed-cell backing rod so the sealant is the right depth and bonds to the sides only.
  5. A flexible exterior sealant is applied and tooled in a colour to suit the wall.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Move anything stored near the joints
  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit

Advice

Can I do it myself?

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

Different surfaces, different methods

Cladding and façade panels

Panel systems often rely on sealant between and around the panels. We reseal them with a sealant suited to the panel material.

Render joints

Render has movement joints and stop beads that need sealing. They’re resealed in a sealant that suits the render.

What affects the cost of external mastic

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • The number of rooms or windows
  • The amount of work
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • Access and height

Instead of a standard rate, we look at what your job involves: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. You’ll know the price before we begin.

Asking for a quote

When you call or email, it’s useful to know:

  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • How we’d reach the joints
  • The rough size of the job

If you are in Marsh Green and need external mastic, ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email. Tell us what the problem is and where, and we’ll agree the price before any work begins.

External mastic in Marsh Green: local notes

Marsh Green is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. With historic houses such as Mottistone Manor (about 1.5 miles north-west) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Marsh Green as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth.

For an older house near a landmark such as St. Mary's Church, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Brighstone Church of England Aided Primary School, movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s.

Why deal with it now?

Low-modulus sealants stretch easily, so they put less strain on the joint edges. That protects surfaces like brick, render and concrete. A stiffer product can damage the joint edge as it fails. In a small place like Marsh Green, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all play a part.
