External mastic near Hulverstone

About our external mastic in Hulverstone

Ground-floor and low-level joints are straightforward to reach. For joints higher up, give us some details of the building and we’ll confirm what’s needed to reach them safely. We work on copings & trims, render & cladding joints and brickwork movement joints, and common reasons people get in touch are plants rooting in failed movement joints and joints with sealant missing in places.

In a village or hamlet like Hulverstone, older cottages and farm buildings often stand in the open, so walls and rooflines take the full force of wind and rain. Joints on those walls need a sealant that moves with the building and stays in place.

Whatever the size of the job, it’s backed by our 12-month guarantee.

Leave it or put it right?

A properly done movement joint is an even line in a colour that suits the wall. A rushed bead with no backing looks untidy and doesn’t last, so it pays to do it properly once. Where a wall is exposed, as many are in small places like Hulverstone, wind-driven rain gets into any failed joint, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. Size, access and the product the joint needs all make a difference.

Hulverstone: your questions answered

Will you come out to Hulverstone?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Does the coastal weather in Hulverstone affect outside sealant?

Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. The right product, a clean joint and the right depth all help it cope.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Always. Sealing over the old bead is the commonest cause of early failure, and it’s something we never do.

Will the new joint stand out?

We aim for a joint that suits the wall rather than one that jumps out. Colour is agreed with you before we begin.

Do you use backing rod?

Backing rod controls the sealant depth and keeps it off the back of the joint. Then the sealant bonds to two faces and can move.

Are you insured?

Yes. We are fully insured, with over 20 years’ experience in sealant work.

Should I try DIY first?

Some simple jobs can be done by a careful DIYer. The usual mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using too much.

Do the sealants smell?

Some sealants have a smell while they cure. Ventilation helps.

Walls and rooflines in Hulverstone

Hulverstone is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Compared with the north and west, the South East gets less rain, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast.

In and around Hulverstone, as anywhere, good external mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

How it works

All our tools and materials come with us in the van. After a quick look at the joints together, the area is protected and the work begins. Most jobs take anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. Somewhere as small as Hulverstone, access is often the only tricky part. If the job is outside, mention outbuildings, exposed walls and how to reach them.

  1. First, the joints are inspected and the access agreed.
  2. Every bit of old sealant and any mortar or debris is cut out.
  3. Joint faces are cleaned back and primed if the sealant needs it.
  4. Backing rod sized to the joint goes in to set the depth.
  5. We apply the sealant, tool it and check the whole run.

Before we arrive

  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
  • Mention any parking rules near the property

When it is not the sealant

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • Cracked brickwork or render that needs a builder or plasterer
  • Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course
  • Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering

If in doubt, phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Concrete & block
  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Façade panels
  • Render & cladding joints
  • Copings & trims

Looking after it afterwards

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Avoid pressure-washing directly into sealant joints
  • Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter
  • Do not let climbing plants root in the sealant
  • Show decorators and builders where the movement joints are

Have a quick look at the joints each spring. Splits, gaps at the edges or plants in the joint are early warning signs.

Water getting behind cladding or render can go unnoticed for a long time. By the time there’s a damp patch, the damage can be well established.

What affects the cost of external mastic

For a quick quote, just ask. What matters most is:

  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • The product the joint needs
  • How easy the joints are to reach
  • The number and length of the joints

We do not show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. For a quick quote, please call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll talk you through it.

Helping us quote

When you contact us, these details help:

  • If someone has resealed it before
  • The rough size of the job
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height

For a quick quote, get us on the phone, or send an email if you’d rather. Describe what needs sealing and we will talk you through the work.

DIY versus a professional finish

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

When to call us in Hulverstone

Using the wrong sealant is another common reason. A high-modulus or general-purpose sealant can be too rigid for a busy joint, so it pulls away from the edges.

Keep an eye out for these signs:

  • Rain getting behind render or cladding at a joint
  • Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
  • Failed seals between different materials
  • Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant

If you live in an older home near St. Mary's Church, older walls, gutters and the joints where extensions meet them need a flexible sealant.
