FAQs for Shide

Is Shide within the area you cover?

Yes, Shide is covered. We work across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

What guarantee comes with external mastic in Shide?

Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever it is. We’re also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Why do you put foam in the joint first?

That’s backing rod, a closed-cell foam. It keeps the sealant at the right depth and bonded to the sides only, which would stop it stretching.

What do you put in the joint?

It depends on the joint: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. We use products from Arbo and Everbuild.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Always. Sealing over old sealant is the main reason resealing fails early, so we never do it.

Can you quote for more than one area?

Of course. Doing several areas at once is normally more efficient, so mention them when you ask for a quote.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. We’re an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

Our base is in Crawley, West Sussex, and we cover South East England, London and all of Scotland.

External mastic in Shide

External mastic is a job where short cuts show quickly. Overfilled joints, missing backing rod and sealant laid over old sealant all tend to fail early. We strip the joint back and start again. We’re often asked to deal with leaking joints around cladding and façade panels and old sealant gone brittle and cracked, on copings & trims, brickwork movement joints and joints between brick and frames.

Homes around Shide range from older cottages to newer houses, with walls and rooflines of every type. Older homes need their gutter and trim joints kept tight, newer ones their movement joints.

Every job is covered by a 12-month guarantee.

What happens on the day

We bring everything the job needs with us. Once we have agreed what’s being done, the area is protected and the work begins. Most jobs take anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. In a smaller place like Shide, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. For outside work, side access and the height of the joints help us plan.

  1. We start by walking round the building and agreeing the joints and the access.
  2. Every bit of old sealant and any mortar or debris is cut out.
  3. The faces are brushed clean and primed where the product requires it.
  4. Backing rod sized to the joint goes in to set the depth.
  5. We apply the sealant, tool it and check the whole run.

Outside joints around Shide

Historic houses like Carisbrooke Castle (about 1 mile west) are a reminder that the area around Shide has older buildings as well as new. In older buildings, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth. London and the South East are among the drier parts of the UK, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind.

If you look after a building such as Nine Acres Primary School, its movement joints, gutters and trims need looking after like any other building’s.

Signs you need external mastic in Shide

Sunlight, wet weather and frost wear exterior sealant down. In time it goes hard, crazes on the surface and stops stretching, so the joint eventually tears or comes away from one side.

The most common problems we see are:

  • Failed sealant between panels on a façade
  • Joints pointed up with cement by mistake
  • Sealant pulling away from one side of the joint
  • Joints with sealant missing in places

In the older streets around Church of St. John the Baptist, old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep.

Our hiring checklist

Can I do it myself?

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

What the job involves on each surface

Brickwork movement joints

Clay brickwork grows slightly over its life and moves with the weather. The movement joint takes that up, so its sealant has to stay flexible.

Concrete and blockwork

Wide joints in concrete need the depth controlling carefully. We size the backing rod to the gap.

Honest limits

Before booking, it’s worth knowing the limits too:

  • Walls that need new movement joints cut into them
  • Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course
  • Render that is blown, hollow or coming away

If in doubt, phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before you book.
