How regrouting works in the Orkney Islands
Across the Orkney Islands, we regrout tiled showers, bathrooms and kitchens. The old grout is raked out, the joints cleaned and new grout laid, and we finish by resealing the edges. We’re often asked to deal with floor grout that has worn and darkened and gaps where the shower grout has gone, on tiled floors, shower walls and bathroom floors.
Good joint work is mostly preparation, and we don’t rush it. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. In total, it generally takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room.
- We agree the area to be regrouted and point out any loose tiles.
- We remove the old grout carefully.
- The joints are cleaned out and vacuumed.
- We grout the joints and wipe the tiles clean.
- Internal corners and edges are resealed.

Near you in Kirkwall
In Kirkwall, that means homes and buildings near Orkney Library and Archive, Kirkwall Grammar School and Paterson Church and the streets around them. A little further out are Balfour Hospital (0.5 miles south-west) and Bishop's Palace (within half a mile south-west). Green spaces nearby include Gallow Ha' and Loomi Shun.
Bathrooms and kitchens across the Orkney Islands
The Orkney Islands has homes of every age, old and new, with plenty of rented property in places like Kirkwall, Stromness and Finstown. Sound sealant and clean grout keep water out and rooms looking cared for.
Scotland has its own building regulations, and homes here bring their own details: harled walls, sash and case windows and, in the larger towns and cities, tenements. The Orkney Islands is part of the area we cover across Scotland. Along the coast in the Orkney Islands, window and wall joints facing the sea take the brunt of the weather, and that’s where sealant generally gives up first. The right product and careful preparation help it last.
Kirkwall: If you live in an older home near Paterson Church, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant. Managing a site like Kirkwall Grammar School? Then washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.
Honest limits
Before booking, it’s worth knowing the limits:
- A leaking shower valve or waste
- Damaged tiles that need replacing
- A structure that flexes behind the tiles
Common problems we fix in the Orkney Islands
Poor ventilation keeps grout damp, and damp grout is where mould grows. When black spots keep returning, the mould has generally got into the grout.
People usually contact us when they notice one of these:
- Crumbling grout between the tiles
- Good tiles let down by tired grout
- Grout in a colour the owner wants to change
- Shower grout that has worn away
What happens if it’s left?
Once grout cracks, water can get behind the tiling. Left alone, that water can loosen tiles or damage the wall, and then you are looking at retiling. Dealing with it now keeps it small.
What your quote should include
- How long the guarantee is
- When the joint can take water or movement
- Is the old sealant removed completely?
- What happens if the job turns out different
Surface by surface
Corners and edges
We reseal edges at the same time as regrouting, so the whole area is finished together.
Kitchen splashbacks
We can regroute a splashback with the kitchen left in place. The joint along the worktop is resealed with silicone.
DIY sealant or a professional job?
A DIY attempt does not rule out a professional job. We cut it out and start again, so just mention it when you contact us.
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.
The Orkney Islands questions
Do you work for letting agents?
Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels.
Can you seal over the old sealant?
No. New silicone will not bond to old silicone, and it traps any mould or water underneath. It all has to come out first.
Can you regrout just the shower?
We can. We will look at the rest of the room too and let you know if more needs doing.
Do I have to be there?
That depends on where the joints are. Inside work needs someone to give us access.
What does regrouting cost?
It depends on the job, so we quote each one individually. To get one, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing and where.
Where do you work from?
Our base is Crawley, with over 20 years’ experience. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.
Could my grout be a different colour after regrouting?
It can. Because the old grout is raked out, the new colour goes all the way into the joint, not just the surface.
