What affects the quote in Tingwall

Jobs vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:

  • The product the joint needs
  • The size of the job
  • Access and height
  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove

We don’t show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. For a quick quote, please drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Asking for a quote

Before you ask for a quote, have a think about:

  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
  • The address or postcode of the job
  • If someone has resealed it before
  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking

Quotes start with a quick conversation. Describe the problem, the location and the size of the job. Whenever you are ready, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Regrouting in Tingwall

Regrouting is usually paired with resealing. Grout is for the joints between tiles, but corners and edges move, so they’re sealed with silicone rather than grout. Doing both at once leaves the whole area sound. We work on wet rooms, kitchen splashbacks and tiled floors, and the jobs we see most are grout in corners that has cracked and grout in a colour the owner wants to change.

A bathroom in a place like Tingwall gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.

We stand behind the work with a one-year guarantee, so you’re covered after we have gone.

Common problems we fix in Tingwall

Strong cleaning products and hard scrubbing slowly erode grout. Bleach and acidic limescale removers can attack it with repeated use, leaving the joints sunken and rough.

These are the problems we’re asked about most:

  • Cracked or crumbling grout lines
  • Dirty, worn grout on a tiled floor
  • Good tiles let down by tired grout
  • Shower grout that has worn away

For jobs in and around Tingwall, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Who does the work, and how experienced they are
  • What product goes in the joint
  • What the quote includes, VAT included or not
  • Whether they seal over old material or remove it

Tingwall questions

Is regrouting in Tingwall guaranteed?

All our work, in Tingwall and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Do you cover Tingwall for regrouting?

Yes, Tingwall is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing.

How long should I wait before showering?

We’ll tell you on the day. The wait depends on the products and conditions so please stick to it.

What sealant do you use?

We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes, every time. New sealant will not bond properly to old, so the joint is cleaned back first.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. We are an ARBOMaster approved applicator, which is run for the Arbo sealant brand.

Could my grout be a different colour after regrouting?

Yes. It’s the ideal time to change it. Tell us the colour you’d like when you ask for a quote.

Do you regrout part of a bathroom, like the shower?

Yes, that is common. Shower grout tends to go before the rest, so many people regrout just that part.

What regrouting looks like in Tingwall

Tingwall is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that doesn’t dry out.

Around Tingwall, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Tingwall is about 8 miles north-west of Kirkwall, in the Orkney Islands. We carry out regrouting for homes and businesses in Tingwall and the surrounding area. We cover 51 towns and villages across the Orkney Islands, from the larger towns to small villages.

What we can’t put right

To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant will not fix:

  • Leaks from pipes, valves or wastes (a plumber’s job)
  • Cracked or broken tiles
  • Movement in a stud wall or floor

If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Tiled floors
  • Bathroom floors
  • Shower walls
  • Kitchen splashbacks
  • Bathroom wall tiles
  • Wet rooms

Different surfaces, different methods

Wet rooms

Wet room grout and sealant need to be in good order. We replace the grout and reseal the edges.

Bathroom wall tiles

Splash areas around basins and baths stain first. We can regroute just those areas or the whole wall.

Looking after it afterwards

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Keep the fan on after showering
  • Keep an eye on the silicone along the edges
  • Rinse the tiles after showering
  • Clean with a soft brush, not anything metal

Have any tile that moves checked straight away. Movement will crack the new grout and lets water in.

Cracked grout does not stay cracked for long. Water gets behind the tiles, and they can begin to come away, so regrouting early can save a retile.

How it works

There’s no need to move everything out, only the area right around the joints. Everything nearby is protected, and the work takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room for a typical job. In smaller Scottish places, parking is generally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.

  1. We agree the area to be regrouted and point out any loose tiles.
  2. We remove the old grout carefully.
  3. Dust is cleared from every joint.
  4. We grout the joints and wipe the tiles clean.
  5. We renew the silicone at the corners and edges.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • Clear items away from the joints we’re working on

DIY versus a professional finish

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.
