How we handle regrouting in Hoy

A grout colour change can freshen a room without retiling. Light grout can go darker to hide marks or back again. Just mention the colour you’d like when you drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk. We work on shower walls, wet rooms and bathroom wall tiles, and the jobs we see most are splashback grout that has darkened and old grout in a dated colour.

A bathroom in a place like Hoy gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.

We stand behind the work with a 12-month guarantee, so you’re covered after we have gone.

What happens if it’s left?

New grout smeared over the old does not bond well. It sits thinly on top and soon flakes away, taking any repair with it. Removing the old grout to an even depth lets the new grout key in properly. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

A few things move the cost up or down: the old material and how easily it comes out, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. Your quote takes all of that into account.

Regrouting in Hoy: local notes

Hoy is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Work on the islands has to be planned around ferry crossings and the weather, so the more notice, the better.

Whether the job is in Hoy itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

Hoy is about 14 miles west of Kirkwall, in the Orkney Islands. Hoy gets the same service as everywhere we cover: old sealant removed completely, careful preparation and a one-year guarantee. Hoy is one of 51 places in the Orkney Islands we cover.

Jobs for regrouting in KW16 is quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Hoy sits on or near the B9049, which makes travel easy. Nearby, we also carry out regrouting in Stromness (4 miles north), Cairston (5 miles north), Clestrain (5 miles north-east), Midland (5 miles east) and Clouston (6 miles north-east). Island and remote addresses take a little more planning, so please mention your location when you drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

DIY versus a professional finish

Not every job suits DIY: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas call for the right materials, safe access and experience.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We cut it out and start again, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.

Signs you need regrouting in Hoy

Grout used in corners or along the bath cracks because those joints flex. Those joints should be silicone, and when they aren’t, water gets in.

The most common problems we see are:

  • Grout washed out of a shower
  • Grout in a colour the owner wants to change
  • Grout that is cracking and breaking up
  • Discoloured grout on otherwise sound tiles

In and around Hoy, as anywhere, good regrouting starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Choosing a sealant specialist

Surface by surface

Corners and edges

We reseal edges at the same time as regrouting, so everything is renewed at once.

Bathroom wall tiles

Splash areas around basins and baths stain first. We can do part of a wall or all of it.

How the visit works

We work through the job in order: protection first, then preparation, sealing and a tidy-up. For most jobs that takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. Somewhere like Hoy may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We check the tiles are sound and flag any that are loose or hollow.
  2. We rake out the old grout to an even depth, taking care of the tile edges.
  3. The joints are vacuumed and cleaned.
  4. Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
  5. Corners and edges are resealed with flexible silicone, not grout.

Before we arrive

  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed
  • Move anything stored near the joints

FAQs for Hoy

Is there a guarantee on regrouting in Hoy?

All our work, in Hoy and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We’re fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Do you cover Hoy for regrouting?

Yes, Hoy is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we will give you a clear price.

Do I need to be at home?

It depends on the job. For work indoors, someone needs to let us in, and for outside work we will agree access with you when we book.

What sealant do you use?

It depends on the joint: sanitary silicone where it gets wet, and sealants suited to movement or weather elsewhere. We use products from Arbo and Everbuild.

Will you leave a mess?

We keep the work tidy. We protect what’s around the joints, and we clear up when we are done.

How long does regrouting take?

That depends on the amount of work, but as a guide it takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. We’ll give you a better idea when we quote.

Do you work for letting agents?

Yes, regularly. We can quote for several properties at once, and between tenancies is a good time for the work.

Can you regrout just the shower?

We can. We will look at the rest of the room too and tell you if anything else needs attention.

When it isn’t the sealant

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • Failed tanking or waterproofing under the tiles
  • A leaking shower valve or waste
  • Tiles that are loose or hollow behind

If you are not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.
