Need gutter sealing in Hoy?

Gutter sealing for homes and businesses in Hoy

Gutter and fascia replacement is not our trade, and nor is roofing. Sealant fixes joints and it can’t mend broken brackets, split sections or blocked downpipes. Common call-outs are for old gutter sealant that has let go and stop ends leaking at the end of a run, on gutter end caps, uPVC fascias and gutter joints.

Across smaller places in Scotland, stone and harled cottages, farm buildings and newer houses often stand exposed to wind and rain. Gutter joints and wall joints take a battering, so they need a sealant that moves with the building.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

What we do, step by step

We bring everything the job needs with us, so you don’t need to buy or prepare anything. Once we have agreed what’s being done, we protect the area and start. Most jobs take an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run. Outdoor work around Hoy depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. First we agree which joints need sealing.
  2. We clean out each joint.
  3. We make sure everything is dry.
  4. The sealant is applied and finished.
  5. We check our work before we leave.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about any water getting in
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • Clear items away from the joints we’re working on

DIY sealant or a professional job?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.

When it is not the sealant

A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:

  • Gutters that have dropped or pulled away
  • Problems with the roof covering
  • Water backing up from a blocked pipe

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before you book.

What we seal

  • Gutter joints
  • uPVC fascias
  • Soffit joints
  • Garage door frames
  • Roofline trims
  • Gutter end caps

What happens if it’s left?

A new garage door is not needed for a leaking frame. Sealing the frame usually stops it. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. Your quote takes all of that into account.

Surface by surface

Roofline trims

Trims along the roofline are often finished with sealant. Split sealant lets water in.

uPVC fascias

Open fascia joints look untidy and can let water in. A neat bead closes them up.

Common questions in Hoy

Is gutter sealing in a coastal place like Hoy any different?

Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.

Is Hoy within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, islands included, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

What about gutters on a second or third storey?

It depends on the access. Let us know the height and the ground below and we will confirm what’s needed.

Will sealant fix a dripping gutter joint?

Most of the time. If the gutter is sagging or cracked, sealing will not last, and we will tell you.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels across the Orkney Islands.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Always. Sealing over the old bead is the commonest cause of early failure, and it’s something we never do.

How long will you be here?

As a guide, most jobs take a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access. Larger jobs naturally take longer.

Will sealing fix a sagging gutter?

No. If the gutter sags, the joints keep opening so it needs refixing before sealing.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Looking after new joints is easy:

  • Rest ladders on the wall, not the gutter
  • Check the gutters during heavy rain
  • Make sure downpipes aren’t blocked
  • Clear leaves and moss from the gutters

Clear the gutters once or twice a year, so water drains away past the joints. Water left in a gutter tests every joint.

Rain getting in round a garage door frame can damage what’s stored inside. Resealing the frame is a quick job while the frame is sound.

Landlord and commercial work in Hoy

Water getting past a failed joint can damage the building, which matters even more when someone else lives there. Resealing at the right time is simple maintenance.

Walls and rooflines in Hoy

Hoy is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That is hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.

In and around Hoy, as anywhere, good gutter sealing starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. For jobs in and around Hoy, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.
