Regrouting for homes and businesses in Stromness
Grout is the filler between your tiles, while sealant goes where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop. Once grout starts to crack or wash away, water has a way in behind the tiling. Our job is to rake it out and put new grout in and renew the silicone at the edges. Typical jobs include kitchen splashback grout stained by grease and stained grout that cleaning won’t shift, across wet rooms, bathroom wall tiles and bathroom floors.
A bathroom in a place like Stromness gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.
All our work is covered by our one-year guarantee.

What we do, step by step
Every visit runs the same way: we look at the joints together, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, do the work and clear up. Most jobs take a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Outdoor work around Stromness depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors is not affected.
- We start by checking the tiles for any that are loose or hollow.
- The old grout comes out to a consistent depth, without damaging the tiles.
- We vacuum the joints and clean out the dust.
- Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
- Corners and edges are resealed with flexible silicone, not grout.
How to prepare
- On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
- Mention if the joints have been sealed before
- Mention any tricky access

Bathrooms and kitchens in Stromness
Stromness is within about 1 mile of the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

DIY versus a professional finish
The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, and the work is guaranteed for a year.
If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

- The number and length of the joints

- The product the joint needs
What you pay reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we ask a few questions first and send you a clear quote before any work starts.

Why act early in Stromness
If tiles are loose, regrouting alone isn’t the answer. We point that out first, so you can decide what to do. On sound tiles, regrouting avoids the upheaval of a retile. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.
What it costs depends on how much there is to do, how hard the old material is to remove and how easy the joints are to reach. We give a clear quote before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

Aftercare tips
Looking after new joints is easy, and it makes a real difference:
- Check the corner silicone every few months
- Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
- Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering
- Don’t ignore a tile that feels loose
Before we leave, you will know when the shower can be used. Please follow it, and go gently on the grout at first.
Cracked grout doesn’t stay cracked for long. Water gets behind the tiles, and they can begin to come away, so regrouting early can save a retile.
How the job changes by surface

Edges are resealed while we’re there, so the whole area is finished together.
