Regrouting for Widewall homes and businesses

About our regrouting in Widewall

Before we start, the tiles are checked. If any tiles are loose or sound hollow, we tell you, because regrouting will not fix what’s behind them. With sound tiles, regrouting is a tidy, lasting improvement. Common call-outs are for crumbling grout between the tiles and kitchen splashback grout stained by grease, on bathroom wall tiles, bathroom floors and shower walls.

Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses. Older buildings can move a little, and that shows first in cracked grout and split sealant.

Your job is guaranteed for a year, as with all our work.

Widewall: your questions answered

Do you cover Widewall for regrouting?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Widewall is part of that. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing.

What guarantee comes with regrouting in Widewall?

Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever it is. We’re fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Is it possible to regrout only the shower area?

Yes. We will look at the rest of the room too and tell you if anything else needs attention.

Can tenants book the work?

Yes. Ask your landlord first, and we can send them the quote if that helps.

Does someone need to be in?

We need access to the joints, so we’ll agree that with you when we book. Indoors, that normally means someone at home.

When can I use the shower again?

Before we leave, we’ll tell you how long to wait. The grout and sealant both need to cure before they get wet.

Can you seal over the old sealant?

No, and we never do. It may look fine at first, but the new layer lifts away from the old one. Removing the old sealant completely is the only lasting way.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. Hotels, offices and other businesses use us and we are fully insured.

How the visit works

On the day, we start by going over the job with you, so there are no surprises. We protect the surfaces around the joints before any work begins. The work usually takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Outdoor work around Widewall depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. We check the tiles for any that are hollow or loose.
  2. The old grout is removed to an even depth.
  3. We vacuum the joints so the new grout bonds.
  4. We regrout the joints and clean the tile faces.
  5. We finish with silicone in the moving joints.

Why it’s worth doing now in Widewall

Grout pens and paint-on colourants only cover the surface. They will not fill gaps or keep water out, and stains can show through again. Raking out and regrouting replaces the grout itself. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

A few things move the cost up or down: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

Why us?

  • Experience in homes, commercial sites and hotels
  • We are fully insured
  • More than 20 years in sealant work
  • Old sealant always removed completely

Read our cost guide and our reviews.

Looking after it afterwards

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Check the corner silicone every few months
  • Rinse the tiles after showering
  • Wipe water off the walls when you are done
  • Stick to mild products for cleaning grout

A squeegee or cloth over the tiles after use stops soap and water sitting on the grout. Ventilate the room well to help it dry out.

Stains that won’t clean are a sign the grout is breaking down. Regrouting at this stage is straightforward while the tiles are still sound.

What affects the cost of regrouting

The price is agreed before any work begins. It takes into account:

  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • The size of the job
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • Working hours on commercial sites

Leaving a failed joint usually makes the job bigger, not smaller, because water and mould keep working on it. If you’re unsure, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Helping us quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in contact, it helps to mention:

  • Roughly how big the job is
  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • The address or postcode of the job
  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height

Every job is quoted individually, so the first step is telling us about yours. Simply email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and describe the job, and pictures are welcome.

DIY versus a professional finish

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We cut it out and start again.

Regrouting around Widewall

Widewall is within about 1 mile of the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Private landlords in Scotland must be registered and meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Tired, leaking sealant is worth putting right before a new tenant moves in.

Whether the job is in Widewall itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

What we’re called out for in Widewall

Most grout is porous, so it soaks up water, soap and dirt. Over time it stains, softens and starts to crumble and showers that get daily use suffer most.

The problems people normally mention when they call include:

  • Crumbling grout between the tiles
  • Grout washed out of a shower
  • Kitchen splashback grout stained by grease
  • Floor grout that has worn and darkened

Around Widewall, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

What to look for in a quote

  • Who does the work, and how experienced they are
  • Whether you can choose the colour
  • How long the guarantee is
  • How the surfaces are prepared before sealing

What the job involves on each surface

Bathroom floors

If floor grout keeps cracking, the floor may be moving. We check the tiles before regrouting.

Bathroom wall tiles

Walls outside the shower get less water but grout there still discolours. Regrouting brings them back in line.
