Our gutter sealing service in the Shetland Islands

Many dripping gutters are just a failed joint or end cap. The joint is cleaned, dried and resealed using a gutter sealant. If the gutter is broken or sagging, we will tell you. We’re often asked to deal with water running down the wall below the gutter and end caps that drip every time it rains, across gutter joints, garage door frames and uPVC fascias.

All our tools and materials come with us in the van, so there’s nothing for you to buy. After a quick look at the joints together, the area is protected and the work begins. Most jobs take an hour or two for a few joints, longer for a full run.

  1. First we trace the drip and check the gutter is not damaged.
  2. The old sealant and dirt are cleaned out of the joint.
  3. We dry the joint so the new sealant can bond.
  4. A gutter sealant is applied to the joint.
  5. We check the run and clear debris near the joints.

How we quote

No two jobs are quite the same, so we quote each one individually. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference, and we will explain the quote if you ask.

What’s near Lerwick

Typical jobs here are in homes near St Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, Grand Hotel and Anderson High School and the streets around them. Well-known places in the area include Gilbert Bain Hospital (within half a mile south) and Shetland Museum (within half a mile north-east). Not far away are Setter Hill and Clickimin Loch.

Walls and rooflines across the Shetland Islands

From Lerwick, Sound and Scalloway to its smaller places, buildings across the Shetland Islands have walls, gutters and rooflines of every age. Each needs a sealant that can move, laid at the right depth.

Our work covers the whole of Scotland, the Shetland Islands included. Longer journeys are planned in advance, and outdoor work around the weather. Coastal guest houses and holiday lets in the Shetland Islands can see heavy use in busy months, which is hard on sealant and grout.

Lerwick: Schools such as Anderson High School are buildings too, and its movement joints, gutters and trims need looking after like any other building’s. In the older streets around St Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

How we quote for gutter sealing

Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • The number and length of the joints
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • Whether the work is at height
  • Working hours on commercial sites

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, because water and mould keep working on it. If you’re unsure, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

Helping us quote

To make quoting easier, please include:

  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
  • Where the job is, and your postcode

If you’re in the Shetland Islands and need gutter sealing, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk. Tell us what the problem is and where, and we will agree the price before any work begins.

DIY versus a professional finish

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

When something else is needed

New sealant cannot fix everything, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. Sealant will not put right:

  • A gutter length that has split
  • Water backing up from a blocked pipe
  • Boards that have decayed or split

Keeping the joints in good condition

Looking after new joints is easy:

  • Look at the gutters while it’s raining
  • Don’t leave a sagging gutter
  • Watch the wall under the gutters for staining
  • Make sure downpipes aren’t blocked

Keep the gutters clear of leaves and moss, so water drains away past the joints. Standing water strains every seal.

A leaking stop end is best sealed before the wet months. Water down the wall all winter can cause damp.

Common questions in the Shetland Islands

Do you install new fascias or gutters?

No. We seal leaking joints and trims. Replacement needs a gutter installer or roofer.

Do you work for letting agents?

Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels.

Will you clear out my gutters?

We clear debris around the joints we are sealing. Full gutter cleaning is a separate job.

How long will you be here?

As a guide, most jobs take a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access. Bigger jobs take longer, and we will say how long yours will take.

Do I have to be there?

For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. After that, you can carry on with your day.

What guarantee comes with the job?

All our work carries a one-year guarantee, and we’re fully insured.

Can I do it myself?

Sometimes. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. If it does not work out, we can redo it.
