Gutter sealing in Houbie

Gutter sealing for homes and businesses in Houbie

Failed sealant round a garage door frame lets rain blow in. We cut out the old sealant and reseal the frame with an exterior sealant. If you have garage door frames letting rain in and wet patches on the wall under a gutter joint, we can help, on garage door frames, roofline trims and gutter end caps alike.

Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. Newer houses need their movement joints and roofline trims kept sound.

A 12-month guarantee comes with the work, just as it does everywhere we cover.

Outdoor mastic being applied where a white frame meets red brickwork, below the fascia and gutter

DIY sealant or a professional job?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

Surface by surface

Gutter end caps

A leaking end cap sends water straight down the wall. It’s a quick reseal.

Garage door frames

The joint between frame and brickwork moves and weathers. An exterior sealant suits them.

Common problems we fix in Houbie

Leaves and moss hold water in the gutter. Water that can’t drain works its way through a weak joint and leaks out.

People usually contact us when they notice something like this:

  • Water running down the wall below the gutter
  • Damp on an inside wall under a dripping gutter
  • Gaps along fascia and soffit joints
  • End caps that drip every time it rains

For an older house near a landmark such as Fetlar Church, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

What your quote should include

  • How long the guarantee is
  • Which colour the sealant will be
  • What insurance they hold
  • What preparation is included

Common questions in Houbie

Do you cover Houbie for gutter sealing?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Houbie is part of that. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.

Is Houbie within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

What about gutters on a second or third storey?

Low gutters are simple to reach. If it’s higher up, let us know and we’ll confirm the access.

Will you clear out my gutters?

The joints we seal are cleaned out and any debris nearby is cleared. Cleaning the whole run is a different job.

Should I try DIY first?

For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.

Do you install new fascias or gutters?

No, we reseal joints and trims. A gutter installer or roofer deals with replacement.

Can you quote for more than one area?

Yes, and it often makes sense. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No. New silicone won’t bond to old silicone, and anything trapped underneath, including mould and water, stays there. We remove it all first.

How we quote for gutter sealing

The quote reflects the job in front of us. We take into account:

  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • Any working-time requirements on site
  • How easy the joints are to reach

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, because water and mould keep working on it. If you’re unsure, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Asking for a quote

You do not need to know the technical terms. Just tell us:

  • The address or postcode of the job
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • What’s wrong with the joints now
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work

Want a quote for gutter sealing? Please drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us about the job. We’ll explain what we’d do and give you a clear quote before work begins.

The process

There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us the job and we’ll take it from there. The job generally takes a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access from start to finish. Somewhere like Houbie may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. First we agree which joints need sealing.
  2. We clean out each joint.
  3. We make sure everything is dry.
  4. The sealant is applied and finished.
  5. We check our work before we leave.

Outside joints around Houbie

Houbie is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Work on the islands has to be planned around ferry crossings and the weather, so the more notice, the better.

Schools such as Fetlar Primary School are buildings too, and larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing.

Houbie is in the Shetland Islands. Homes, rented property, offices and hotels in Houbie can book us for gutter sealing, old or new, large or small. The work is guaranteed for a year. Our area takes in 63 places across the Shetland Islands, large and small.
