Aftercare tips

Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:

  • Do not lean ladders against the gutter itself
  • Have sagging gutters refixed early
  • Clear leaves and moss from the gutters
  • Watch the wall under the gutters for staining

Look at fascia and trim joints when you’re checking the gutters. A small split is quicker to put right.

If an end cap is dripping, deal with it before winter. A winter of drips can lead to damp patches.

Gutter sealing in Hogaland, done properly

Water dripping from a gutter joint can stain walls and soak the ground below. Often a reseal is enough if the gutter isn’t damaged. We work on gutter end caps, roofline trims and gutter joints, and people most often call us about water running down the wall below the gutter and open joints in fascias and soffits.

Across smaller places in Scotland, stone and harled cottages, farm buildings and newer houses often stand exposed to wind and rain. Gutter joints and wall joints take a battering, so they need a sealant that moves with the building.

You get a one-year guarantee, the same in Hogaland as everywhere else we work.

Why deal with it now?

Leaving a leaking end cap can send water down the wall all winter. Resealing it is a quick job before the damage spreads. Around Hogaland, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.

Homes and businesses are quoted the same way: the amount of work, the access and the products needed, plus any working-time requirements on site. Call for a quick quote and we will go through it with you.

Hogaland: your questions answered

Is Hogaland within the area you cover?

Yes, Hogaland is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Does the coastal weather in Hogaland affect outside sealant?

Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes, and it often makes sense. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit.

Do you install new fascias or gutters?

No. Our work is sealing joints; replacing gutters and fascias needs a gutter or roofline installer.

Is it messy?

We keep the work tidy. We protect what’s around the joints.

Can a leaking gutter joint be sealed?

Most of the time. If the gutter is sagging or cracked, sealing won’t last, and we will tell you.

Do you work for letting agents?

Yes, often. Several properties can go on one quote, and between tenancies is a good time for the work.

How much does gutter sealing cost in Hogaland?

There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: its size, the old material, access and the product needed. We agree the price before any work begins.

What gutter sealing looks like in Hogaland

Hogaland is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on gutter, fascia and roofline joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

In and around Hogaland, as anywhere, good gutter sealing starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. If you live in an older home near Ollaberry Church and Churchyard with Monument, older walls, gutters and the joints where extensions meet them need a flexible sealant.

Hogaland is in the Shetland Islands. Hogaland gets the same service as everywhere we cover: old sealant removed completely, careful preparation and a 12-month guarantee. 63 places in the Shetland Islands are on our list, from the larger towns to small villages.

Work in ZE2 is quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. You’ll find Hogaland on the B9079, so it’s easy for us to get to with everything needed for gutter sealing. Neighbouring places we cover for gutter sealing include Ollaberry (1 mile north-east), Urafirth (3 miles west), Sullom (4 miles south), Hillswick (4 miles west) and Scatsta (5 miles south-east). If you’re somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed, so let us know when you get in touch.

Gutter joints

A dripping joint doesn’t always mean a failed gutter. Resealing is normally enough.

uPVC fascias

Our work is the joints, not new fascias. Damaged boards need replacing by an installer.

Can I do it myself?

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

What happens on the day

A visit follows a simple pattern: we check the joints, protect the area around them, do the work and clear up. Most jobs take a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access. Outside jobs in Hogaland need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors is not affected.

  1. First, we find the drip and check the gutter isn’t cracked or sagging.
  2. Old sealant and dirt are removed from the joint.
  3. The area is dried so the sealant can bond.
  4. Gutter or exterior sealant is applied and finished.
  5. The run is checked and any debris near the joints is cleared.

There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can tell us:

  • A few pictures by email, if you can
