Window mastic near Hogaland

What happens on the day

We bring everything the job needs with us, so there’s nothing for you to buy. After a quick look at the joints together, the area is protected and the work begins. Most jobs take anything from an hour or two to a full day, depending on how many frames there are. Around Hogaland, distance and access matter more than parking. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. First, we go round the frames with you and agree the list.
  2. We remove the old mastic and clean the frame edge and wall.
  3. Where the gap is deep, backing rod goes in first.
  4. A flexible exterior sealant is applied in a colour to suit the frame.
  5. We tool each bead neatly and check every joint is closed.

Advice

Window mastic in Hogaland, done properly

Every window and door frame has a gap around it, and mastic is what closes it. Once that seal fails, wind and rain find the gap. The old mastic is removed and the joint resealed with a flexible exterior sealant. If you are dealing with gaps between the frame and the inside reveal and gaps where the sill meets the wall, we can help, whatever the surface.

Older stone-built homes in Scotland often have sash and case or timber windows set in stone. Those suit a traditional sand mastic or a neutral-cure sealant, not an acetoxy silicone that can attack some stone.

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job, large or small.

Windows and doors in Hogaland

Hogaland is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on the mastic around window and door frames, especially on the side facing the sea. Island jobs need planning around ferries and the weather, so the more notice, the better.

In and around Hogaland, as anywhere, good window mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Hogaland is in the Shetland Islands. Hogaland gets the same service as everywhere we cover: the old material taken out, joints prepared properly and a 12-month guarantee. Hogaland is one of 63 towns and villages in the Shetland Islands we cover for window mastic.

Work in ZE2 works the same way as everywhere else we cover. Being close to the B9079, Hogaland is simple for us to get to for window mastic. If you’re just outside Hogaland, we cover Ollaberry (1 mile north-east), Urafirth (3 miles west), Sullom (4 miles south), Hillswick (4 miles west) and Scatsta (5 miles south-east). If you’re somewhere remote, the job takes a little more planning, so mention it when you ask for a quote.

FAQs for Hogaland

Is window mastic in a coastal place like Hogaland any different?

Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. Walls facing the sea are usually the first to need attention.

Is Hogaland in your area for window mastic?

Yes, Hogaland is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes. Sealing over the old bead is the commonest cause of early failure, and it’s something we never do.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. We are ARBOMaster approved, the scheme for applicators of Arbo sealants.

Do I need to be at home?

For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. After that, you can carry on with your day.

Can I do it myself?

That depends on the joint. High-level, external movement and fire-rated joints are professional jobs, while a short indoor joint may be within reach.

What do you put in the joint?

Each joint gets the product that suits it. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference, and we’ll explain our choice.

Can you seal the gap between the frame and the plaster indoors?

Yes, we do both. Indoors, we seal between the frame and the plaster or reveal.

For landlords and businesses

Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report, and it’s easy to sort out between tenants. We can quote for more than one property at once.

Landlords and letting agents in Hogaland can book us as well as householders. Sealant work between tenants keeps a property looking cared for before the next move-in.

Signs you need window mastic in Hogaland

Frames are never completely still. A plastic or aluminium frame lengthens in sunshine and shortens as it cools, while the masonry beside it stays put. A sealant that can’t keep up eventually tears.

It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:

  • White mastic on grey or black frames
  • Cracked or shrunken mastic around the frame
  • Mastic that’s falling out in pieces
  • Draughty joints inside around the window

If you live in an older home near Ollaberry Church and Churchyard with Monument, replacement windows fitted into old openings often leave uneven gaps that need backing and a flexible joint.

10 questions to ask before booking

Why deal with it now?

Not every sealant suits a window. Interior caulk and bathroom silicone aren’t made for exterior frame joints. An exterior, low-modulus sealant stays flexible in sun and frost. In an older home around Hogaland, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.

Homes and businesses are quoted the same way: the amount of work, the access and the products needed. Call for a quick quote and we will go through it with you.

Honest limits

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • Faulty window hardware
  • Damp problems in the wall away from the window
  • A failed sealed unit that has misted up

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.

Looking after it afterwards

Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. We recommend:

  • Keep jet washers away from the mastic
  • Keep solvents and bleach off the sealant
  • Keep paint and stain on wooden frames in good order
  • Walk round the house once a year and look at the joints

Timber frames need their paint kept up, since wood that gets wet swells and shrinks more. Keep paint off the silicone itself.

Draughts get worse, not better. As the old mastic shrinks further, more air gets through, and heat escapes around the frame. A new joint closes it up.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is.
