About our regrouting in Hogaland

Grout is the filler between your tiles, while sealant goes where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop. Once grout starts to crack or wash away, water can get in behind the tiles. We rake it out and replace it and renew the silicone at the edges. We work on shower walls, bathroom floors and wet rooms, and common reasons people get in touch are grout stained black or orange that won’t clean and good tiles let down by tired grout.

For a place like Hogaland, the job is the same as anywhere: everything old is cut out, the joints are cleaned and dried, and new sealant or grout goes in. The journey and access are simply planned in advance.

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job, whatever its size.

How it works

On the day, we start by going over the job with you. We protect the surfaces around the joints before any work begins. Most jobs take a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Outside jobs in Hogaland need a dry day, because sealant won’t bond to a wet joint, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. We check the tiles are sound and flag any that are loose or hollow.
  2. Old grout is raked out to a consistent depth without chipping the tiles.
  3. Dust and debris are vacuumed out of every joint.
  4. New grout is worked into the joints and cleaned off the tile faces.
  5. Corners and edges are resealed with flexible silicone, not grout.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about any water getting in
  • Move anything stored near the joints
  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints

Aftercare tips

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering
  • Use gentle cleaners on grout
  • Keep harsh bleach and acid cleaners off the grout
  • Check the corner silicone every few months

If a tile starts to feel loose, get it looked at early. A loose tile cracks the grout around it and lets water in.

Tiles can come away if failed grout is left. By then, new grout alone is not enough, so it’s worth acting early.

When it isn’t the sealant

Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what sealant cannot fix:

  • A leaking shower valve or waste
  • Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling
  • A floor or wall that keeps moving

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.

Questions from Hogaland

Do you cover smaller places like Hogaland?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is there a guarantee on regrouting in Hogaland?

Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever it is. We’re also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

How long will you be here?

Most jobs take a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room, including the preparation. We will confirm how long when we quote.

What does regrouting cost?

Size, access and the old material all affect the cost. Call for a quick quote and we will talk you through it.

Do the sealants smell?

That depends on the sealant. Some products have a noticeable smell, others very little, and any smell fades as they cure.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Yes, always, and completely. New sealant won’t bond properly to old, so the joint is cleaned back first.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes. Hotels, offices and other businesses use us, and we’re fully insured.

What goes in the corners, grout or silicone?

We use silicone in corners and along edges. Grout in those joints cracks as the building moves.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

Some jobs are best left to a professional: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas call for the right materials, safe access and experience.

What affects the cost of regrouting

For a quick quote, just ask. What matters most is:

  • Mould in or behind the old joints
  • The old material and how stubborn it is
  • The type of sealant required
  • Access and height

Leaving a failed joint usually makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re unsure, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Helping us quote

Photos by email are helpful but not essential. Please mention:

  • If someone has resealed it before
  • Photos by email, if that’s easy
  • Roughly how big the job is
  • Where the property is

A good description makes for an accurate quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is, and add pictures by email if you can.

What we’re called out for in Hogaland

Harsh cleaners and scrubbing wear grout away. Bleach and acidic limescale removers can attack it with repeated use, until the joints are rough and low.

Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Old grout in a dated colour
  • Corners filled with grout instead of silicone
  • Grout stained black or orange that will not clean
  • Floor grout that won’t come clean

If you live in an older home near Ollaberry Church and Churchyard with Monument, walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first.

Regrouting around Hogaland

Hogaland is within about 1 mile of the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Private landlords in Scotland must be registered and meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Tired, leaking sealant is worth putting right before a new tenant moves in.

Around Hogaland, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Why deal with it now?

Regrouting keeps the tiles you already have. Retiling means stripping the walls, making good and choosing new tiles, and often a few days without a shower. If the tiles are sound, regrouting is the simpler fix. In a place like Hogaland, small leaks are easy to put off, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. Your quote takes all of that into account.
