Trusted regrouting in Firth

Regrouting in Firth: local notes

Firth is close to the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

Whether the job is in Firth itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish. In and around Firth, as anywhere, good regrouting starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Firth is in the Shetland Islands. Across the ZE2 area, we cover regrouting for homes and businesses. We cover 63 towns and villages across the Shetland Islands, large and small.

Every address in ZE2 is within our area for regrouting. You’ll find streets such as Midlea, Leaside and Sandside. We also cover the places around Firth: Mossbank (1 mile north-east), Scatsta (4 miles west), Vidlin (6 miles south), Sullom (6 miles west) and Burravoe (6 miles north-east). If you are somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed.

How we handle regrouting in Firth

We regroute showers, bathroom walls and floors, splashbacks and wet rooms. Some jobs are a whole room, or just the area that has failed. Either way, tiled areas in Firth are handled the same careful way. We work on shower walls, bathroom wall tiles and kitchen splashbacks, and common reasons people get in touch are floor grout that won’t come clean and stained grout that cleaning won’t shift.

Bathrooms in smaller places like Firth work just as hard as those in the cities. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

Big or small, it’s backed by our one-year guarantee.

The process

There’s no need to move everything out, just the space around the work. We protect the rest, and the work takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room in most cases. Outdoor work around Firth depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. First, we check for loose or hollow tiles and point out any we find.
  2. Old grout is raked out to a consistent depth without chipping the tiles.
  3. Dust and debris are vacuumed out of every joint.
  4. Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
  5. We reseal the internal corners and edges with silicone.

Keeping the joints in good condition

Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. We recommend:

  • Do not use strong acidic cleaners on grout
  • Wipe water off the walls when you are done
  • Skip wire brushes and scourers
  • Stick to mild products for cleaning grout

If a tile starts to feel loose, get it looked at early. A loose tile cracks the grout around it and open a path for water.

Leaving failed grout can mean tiles come loose. Once that happens, regrouting won’t fix it, so it’s worth acting early.

What affects the cost of regrouting

Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • The number and length of the joints
  • The product the joint needs
  • When we can work, for business premises

What you pay reflects the work, not a rough estimate. That is why we ask a few questions first and agree the price before starting.

What to tell us for a quote

Photos help, but a description is a good start. Try to tell us:

  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • Photos by email, if that’s easy
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved

The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints, and add photos by email if you can.

When it isn’t the sealant

We will always be straight with you, so here’s what sealant can’t fix:

  • Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling
  • Tiles that have come away from the wall
  • Leaks from pipes, valves or wastes (a plumber’s job)

Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before booking.

All our work, in Firth and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Do I need to be at home?

For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. After that, you can carry on with your day.

What does regrouting cost?

There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: how much there is, what’s there now, how we reach it and what it needs. We agree the price before any work begins.

Which products do you use?

Each joint gets the product that suits it. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference, and we will tell you what we’re using.

Do you work for letting agents?

Yes. As well as householders, we work for landlords, agents, businesses and hotels.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. Commercial and hotel work is a large part of what we do. We can talk about working times when we quote.

No. The area is protected while we work and cleaned up afterwards.

Why it’s worth doing now in Firth

With regrouting, your tiles stay where they are. Retiling is a much bigger job: stripping, making good, new tiles and new grout, and often a few days without a shower. When the tiles are fine, it’s the sensible first step. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

No two jobs are quite the same, so we quote each one individually. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference.

What you get with us

  • Every job guaranteed for a year
  • Tidy, careful work
  • Old sealant always removed completely

DIY versus a professional finish

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

For landlords and businesses

In hotels, rooms out of use cost money, so we plan the work room by room. We’ve worked in hotels as well as homes and businesses.

If you manage several properties in or around Firth, several properties can go on one quote. Send us the addresses and the work at each.
