Remedial sealant & repairs in Hogaland, Shetland Islands
Failed sealant joints in Hogaland need attention? We cut out the old, prepare the joints and apply the right sealant.
- Caulk or the wrong sealant used in a wet area
- Thick, messy sealant smeared over tiles
- Torn expansion joints
Keeping the joints in good condition
To keep the joints looking good and working properly:
- Never fill a movement joint with mortar or grout
- Always have old sealant cut out, not covered
- Deal with small splits early
- Use a soft cloth, not a scourer, on silicone
Watch the joint over the first few weeks, especially if movement was the problem. Should anything change, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
Do not keep resealing the same joint. Get the cause found first, otherwise the next attempt will fail too.
Remedial sealant in Hogaland
Two decades of sealant work means we recognise most failures quickly. We are ARBOMaster approved and fully insured, and every remedial job comes with a 12-month guarantee. Typical jobs include thick, messy sealant smeared over tiles and beads that never stuck properly, across shrunken worktop sealant, failed movement joints and leaking tray & enclosure joints.
A bathroom in a place like Hogaland gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.
A one-year guarantee comes as standard.

What sealant work can’t fix
We will not take on work that will not last, so here’s what sealant can’t put right:
- A cracked shower tray or bath (that needs repair or replacing)
- Plumbing leaks behind walls or under trays
- Failed tanking or loose tiles behind the sealant
Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.

Why it’s worth doing now in Hogaland
A joint that has failed twice will fail again unless the cause is dealt with. Finding it, whether movement, water from elsewhere or an unsuitable product, ends the cycle. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.
We do not show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. For a quick quote, please email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll talk you through it.

What we do, step by step
All our tools and materials come with us in the van, so there’s nothing for you to buy. Once we have agreed what’s being done, the area is protected and the work begins. Most jobs take a few hours, depending on how many layers have to come out. For a place like Hogaland, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.
- We start by checking the joint for movement, leaks and the reason it failed.
- We strip the joint completely, removing any layers below.
- Next, any mould is treated and the joint dried.
- Where the joint moves, backing and a flexible sealant suited to the movement go in.
- The new joint is tooled neatly and we explain anything else we found.
Getting ready for the visit
- Keep children and pets away from the work area
- Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
- Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints

My shower still leaks after a reseal. Can you sort it?
Yes, usually. We check it’s the sealant and not the tray, valve or waste, then the joints are stripped and resealed.
Do the sealants smell?
Some sealants have a smell while they cure, which fades as it sets. Ventilation helps.
Do you do commercial work?
Yes, regularly. We can plan bigger jobs in stages to suit the site.
Can I add another job to the visit?
Yes. Just list everything you need and we will quote it together.
Is it messy?
Tidy work is part of the job. We protect what’s around the joints.
Can you reseal a split movement joint?
Yes. If a joint has been filled with mortar or rigid filler, we rake it out where possible, and reseal with a flexible product.

Signs you need remedial sealant in Hogaland
Sealant needs a clean, dry surface with no grease on it. Soap film, dust, damp or old residue stop it gripping, so it starts lifting sooner than it should.
Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:
- A second bead peeling off the first
- Leaks that keep coming back after resealing
- Sealant that came away because the surface wasn’t prepared
- Kitchen joints letting water behind the worktop
In the older streets around Ollaberry Church and Churchyard with Monument, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.
