Glazing silicone in Hogaland

Glazing silicone in Hogaland, done properly

Glazing joints need a sealant made for glass. We use a neutral-cure glazing silicone, which suits glass and most frame materials, finished with a neat, even bead. We work on shower screens, glass-to-glass joints and glass-to-frame joints, and common reasons people get in touch are mouldy sealant around glass panels and water running down inside the glass.

In and around a place like Hogaland, homes range from older stone-built cottages to newer houses. Wind-driven rain finds any gap around a frame or sill.

Each job carries a 12-month guarantee.

Windows and doors in Hogaland

Hogaland is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on glazing joints and frame seals, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Island jobs need planning around ferries and the weather, so give us as much notice as you can.

In and around Hogaland, as anywhere, good glazing silicone starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. For an older house near a landmark such as Ollaberry Church and Churchyard with Monument, replacement windows fitted into old openings often leave uneven gaps that need backing and a flexible joint.

Hogaland is in the Shetland Islands. We provide glazing silicone to householders, landlords and businesses in Hogaland and the surrounding area, as part of our work across the Shetland Islands. Hogaland is one of 63 towns and villages in the Shetland Islands we cover.

Work in ZE2 is quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Hogaland is on the B9079, so it’s easy for us to get to. We also cover Ollaberry (1 mile north-east), Urafirth (3 miles west), Sullom (4 miles south), Hillswick (4 miles west) and Scatsta (5 miles south-east). Remote and island addresses need a little more planning, so tell us where you are when you ask for a quote.

How the job changes by surface

Glass-to-frame joints

Old sealant is removed carefully from the glass before new glazing silicone goes in.

Shower screens

Silicone holds the water in on frameless screens. We renew it without marking the glass.

Aftercare tips

No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:

  • Get a new leak looked at quickly
  • Look over the glazing joints once a year
  • Wipe the screen down after showering
  • Clean glass with a mild cleaner and a soft cloth

Look over the glazing joints every year or so. Catching a split early keeps the repair small.

Cracked glazing silicone means the joint has failed. Resealing now is a small job, compared with repairing damaged frames or plaster.

Hogaland questions

Do you cover smaller places like Hogaland?

Yes, Hogaland is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Does the coastal weather in Hogaland affect outside sealant?

Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so preparation and the right sealant matter all the more. It’s worth checking the walls that face the sea first.

Can you reseal a frameless shower screen?

Yes, it’s a common job. We use anti-fungal silicone made for wet areas.

Can you replace a misted double-glazed unit?

No, our work is the silicone. Glass and sealed units need a glazier.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Yes. All of the old material is cut out and the joint cleaned before resealing.

Will you leave a mess?

Not at all. We work neatly, protect the area around the joints and tidy up afterwards.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes, regularly. Several properties can go on one quote, and between tenancies is a good time for the work.

How do I get a quote for glazing silicone in Hogaland?

We don’t publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: its size, the old material, access and the product needed. You’ll get a clear quote before any work starts.

Why deal with it now?

Leaks get worse, not better. Water can damage frames, walls, flooring and furniture, so it pays to deal with it early. Around Hogaland, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.

The cost depends on how much there is to do, how much old material has to come out and access to the work. You’ll have a clear quote before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

What affects the cost of glazing silicone

Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • How many areas need sealing
  • Access and height
  • The amount of work
  • Working hours on commercial sites

Instead of a standard rate, we price the job in front of us: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. The price is agreed before we begin.

Helping us quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs
  • A few pictures by email, if you can
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved

Need a quote? Please send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details. You’ll know what we plan to do, and what it will cost, before any work begins.

The process

When we arrive, we start by going over the job with you. We protect the surfaces around the joints before any work starts. The work usually takes a few hours for most jobs. Outside jobs in Hogaland need a dry day, because sealant won’t bond to a wet joint, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We trace the leak and confirm it’s a sealant joint.
  2. We remove the old sealant carefully.
  3. We clean the glass and frame so the new silicone bonds.
  4. A neutral-cure glazing silicone is applied and tooled.
  5. We check the finished joints and test with water where it’s safe.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us if parking is tricky
  • Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work
  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive

Letting agents often deal with us directly. Send the address, what’s needed and the access arrangements.

From a single let to a portfolio, you get the same standard of work: old sealant fully removed, joints prepared properly and a 12-month guarantee.

Should I try it myself first?

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.

Some jobs are best left to a professional: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas call for the right materials, safe access and experience.
