Sealant work in G1

About bathroom resealing in G1

It is not only bathrooms. The joint between worktop and wall, the edge of the sink and the bottom of the splashback all take splashes every day, and water behind a laminate worktop can make it swell. Kitchen joints get a sealant suited to kitchens, colour-matched where it shows. We are often asked to deal with a reseal done over the top of the old bead and shrunken sealant along the back of a worktop, across basins & vanity units, shower trays & enclosures and wet rooms.

Good joint work is mostly preparation, so that is where we spend the time. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. In total, it usually takes around two hours for one bath or shower, longer for a whole bathroom.

  1. We start by protecting the area and stripping out the old bead, including the film left on the tiles.
  2. The joint is cleaned, degreased and treated for mould.
  3. We let it dry fully and fill the bath with water before sealing.
  4. New anti-fungal silicone goes on in a colour to suit and is tooled to a clean finish.
  5. We clear away and tell you when it can get wet, normally after around 24 hours.

How we quote

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: the old material and how easily it comes out, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

Why book with us

  • Tidy, careful work
  • You choose the colour before work begins
  • Anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas
  • Trusted Arbo and Everbuild sealants

Bathrooms and kitchens across G1

Across G1, from Calton, Blythswood Hill and Townhead outwards, we see bathrooms and kitchens of every age. Sealant and grout wear out in all of them, whether it’s a family bathroom, a rented flat or a hotel en suite.

Homes in Scotland come with their own details: harled walls, sash and case windows and, in the larger towns and cities, tenements. We work across Scotland, including G1.

Calton: In the older streets around Calton New Parish Church, timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them. For landlords with property near Bellgrove station, a reseal between tenants is a quick way to make the bathroom and kitchen look cared for.

Leave it or put it right?

Mould removers can fade the surface of a stained bead, but where mould is inside the silicone it generally comes back. The lasting answer is to remove the bead and start again.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How much experience the applicator has
  • The length of the guarantee
  • Whether you can choose the colour
  • Whether all the old sealant comes out first

What we’re called out for in G1

Silicone needs a clean, dry surface without any grease to stick to. Traces of soap, bath oil and old sealant stop it gripping, and a joint that looked fine soon begins to come away.

If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:

  • Failed sealant on the screen profile
  • New sealant laid over old sealant that is now lifting
  • Lumpy, uneven sealant from a DIY attempt
  • Water getting behind the kitchen upstand

What affects the quote in G1

We do not publish a price list. The quote depends on:

  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • When we can work, for business premises
  • The product the joint needs
  • The size of the job

Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference.

What we need to know

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in contact, it helps to mention:

  • How we’d reach the joints
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel

For a quote, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with the location and a short description of the problem. You will have a clear quote before any work starts.

When something else is needed

To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant won’t fix:

  • Cracked or missing grout between tiles (that is regrouting)
  • Damage behind the tiles that needs a tiler
  • A tray that rocks until it’s re-bedded

Keeping the joints in good condition

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Keep an eye on the corners, where splits start
  • Do not leave water standing on kitchen joints
  • Open a window or run the fan so the room dries
  • Dry the bead with a towel now and then

In a kitchen, don’t let water sit along the back of the worktop and keep hot pans away from the silicone. The drier the joint stays, the longer it lasts.

Worktop joints fail quietly. Water gets behind the upstand and into the edge of a laminate worktop, where it can make the board swell. Resealing before that happens protects the worktop.

FAQs for G1

Do you cover G1?

We do. G1 is part of the area we cover.

Is it messy?

No. We protect the surfaces around the joints, and we tidy up before we go.

How long does it take to reseal a bath or shower?

One bath or shower is around two hours’ work, including cutting out the old sealant. A whole bathroom plus the kitchen may take most of the day.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes, always, and completely. New sealant won’t bond properly to old, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.

Can landlords and businesses book you?

Yes, regularly. Several properties can be quoted together, and between tenancies is a good time for the work.

Is it worth trying it myself?

Some simple jobs can be done by a careful DIYer. The usual mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using too much.

How long before the new sealant can get wet?

We give you the cure time before we leave, and it’s usually around 24 hours. Using it sooner can damage the bead.
