Regrouting in Portsmouth: how it works
A grout colour change can freshen a room without retiling. You might go from white to grey, or the other way round. Tell us what you have in mind when you ask for a quote. We’re often asked to deal with good tiles let down by tired grout and grout washed out of a shower, across bathroom floors, tiled floors and bathroom wall tiles.
When we get to you, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. After that, the work takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room.
- We check the tiles are sound and flag any that are loose or hollow.
- We rake out the old grout to an even depth, taking care of the tile edges.
- Dust and debris are vacuumed out of every joint.
- We fill the joints with new grout, then clean the tiles.
- Corners and edges are resealed with flexible silicone, not grout.
What you’ll pay
A few things move the cost up or down: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. We take all of that into account in your quote.
Why choose Mr Mastic
- Homes, businesses and hotels
- Arbo and Everbuild products
- Any old sealant cut out fully, not covered over
- Sanitary silicone with an anti-fungal additive in wet areas

Regrouting across Portsmouth: local notes
In Portsmouth, regrouting takes in flats, houses, rentals and businesses, from Southsea, Milton and Landport to the quieter places in between. Wherever the job is, all the old material comes out before anything new goes in.
Most of the South East has hard water, so limescale builds up on sealant, grout and fittings. Whatever the job in Portsmouth, surfaces are cleaned back properly before new sealant goes in. Along the coast in Portsmouth, holiday lets and guest houses can have bathrooms in near-constant use, so their sealant and grout wear faster than most, and the weather is hard on the outside too.
Portsmouth: Managing a site like Manor Infant School? Then washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes. For landlords with property near Fratton station, a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant.
How the job changes by surface
Corners and edges
Edges are resealed while we are there, so the whole area is finished together.
Bathroom wall tiles
Walls outside the shower get less water but grout there still discolours. New grout freshens them up.
When something else is needed
We’d rather tell you now than do work that will not last, so here’s what sealant cannot put right:
- Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling
- Water coming from plumbing rather than grout
- Tiles that have come away from the wall
Aftercare tips
To keep the joints looking good and working properly:
- Use gentle cleaners on grout
- Clean with a soft brush, not anything metal
- Run the extractor fan during and after a shower
- Get any tile that moves checked promptly
Clean the grout with a mild bathroom cleaner and a soft brush. Keep harsh bleach and acid limescale removers away from it because they wear grout away.
Grout that’s washing out of a shower shouldn’t be left. Each shower drives water into the open joints, and that water can reach the wall or the floor below.
DIY versus a professional finish
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.
Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.
How we quote for regrouting
You’ll get a clear quote before we start. It’s based on:
- The product the joint needs
- Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
- Whether there’s mould to deal with
- Whether the work is at height
Rather than a set price list, we price the job in front of us: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. The price is agreed before we begin.
What to tell us for a quote
When you call or email, it’s useful to know:
- What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
- The address or postcode of the job
- If someone has resealed it before
- Photos by email, if that’s easy
We do not publish a price list, as no two jobs are quite the same. Instead, we give you a clear quote for your job. To arrange one, call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email.
Portsmouth questions
Do you work for letting agents?
Yes. Domestic, commercial and hotel work are all part of what we do, and we are fully insured.
Is it possible to regrout only the shower area?
Yes, that’s common. The shower generally fails first, so it’s often the only area that needs doing.
Is it OK to seal over old sealant?
No. Fresh sealant doesn’t stick to old sealant, and it traps any mould or water underneath. It all has to come out first.
What if some of my tiles are loose?
New grout cannot hold loose tiles in place. We check the tiles first and tell you if any are loose or hollow so you know where you stand.
Is there any odour?
Sometimes, a little. It fades as the sealant cures.
Is it worth trying it myself?
That depends on the joint. High-level, external movement and fire-rated joints are professional jobs.
Is it messy?
Very little: the area around the joints is protected first, and we tidy up before we go.
