Aftercare tips

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Check the corner silicone every few months
  • Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers on grout
  • Use a squeegee on the tiles after showering
  • Run the extractor fan during and after a shower

We’ll tell you when the area can be used again. Please follow it, and go gently on the grout at first.

Small problems with grout are quick to put right. Left, the same problem can let water through, so get it looked at when you notice it.

Regrouting in North End

Changing the grout colour is a simple way to update tiles. You might go from white to grey or back again. Just mention the colour you’d like when you ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email. If you’re dealing with gaps where the shower grout has gone and floor grout that won’t come clean, we can help, whatever the surface.

Around North End, you’ll mostly find houses and bungalows, some older and some much newer. Bathrooms and kitchens here get the same daily wear as anywhere, and the sealant and grout show it first.

We stand behind the work with a 12-month guarantee, so you’re not left on your own once the job is done.

Common problems we fix in North End

Harsh cleaners and scrubbing wear grout away. Some bleaches and acid descalers break grout down with repeated use, until the joints are rough and low.

People usually contact us after spotting something like this:

  • Floor grout that will not come clean
  • Grout in a colour the owner wants to change
  • Stained grout that cleaning will not shift
  • Kitchen splashback grout stained by grease

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School, we reseal washrooms and kitchens in schools and businesses as well as homes.

Before booking anyone

  • Is the old sealant removed completely?
  • When the joint can take water or movement
  • How the colour is chosen
  • Whether they’re fully insured

Bathrooms and kitchens in North End

North End is within about 1 mile of the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Most of the South East has hard water, which leaves limescale on sealant, grout and fittings, and it has to be cleaned off before new sealant goes in.

Rented homes near Hilsea station change hands often, and a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant. If you live in an older home near St. Mark’s, walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first.

What we can’t put right

New sealant can’t fix everything, and we will tell you before we start. It won’t solve:

  • Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling
  • Tiles that have come away from the wall
  • Cracked or broken tiles

If in doubt, ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we will say what we think.

How the visit works

We work through the job in order: protection first, then preparation, sealing and a tidy-up. For most jobs that takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room and we leave things clean and tidy. For a job in North End, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. If the work is outside, the weather plays a part, as sealant needs a dry surface.

  1. We start by checking the tiles for any that are loose or hollow.
  2. Old grout is raked out to a consistent depth without chipping the tiles.
  3. We vacuum the joints and clean out the dust.
  4. Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
  5. Corners and edges are resealed with flexible silicone, not grout.

Before we arrive

  • Keep children and pets away from the work area
  • Mention any parking rules near the property
  • Move anything stored near the joints

Common questions in North End

Do you work for landlords with property near Hilsea station?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with the details for a clear quote.

Do you cover smaller places like North End?

Yes. North End is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Should corners be grouted or sealed?

We use silicone in corners and along edges. Grout in those joints cracks as the building moves.

Can I do it myself?

Sometimes. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No, and we never do. It may look fine at first, but the new layer lifts away from the old one. Removing the old sealant completely is the only lasting way.

Can you regrout if a few tiles are loose?

New grout can’t hold loose tiles in place. We check the tiles first and tell you if any are loose or hollow so you know where you stand.

How long will you be here?

It depends on the size of the job, but as a guide it takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. We will tell you when we quote.

Is it possible to regrout only the shower area?

We can. We’ll check the other tiled areas as well and let you know if more needs doing.

Should I try it myself first?

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.

Surface by surface

Shower walls

Most regrouting jobs include a shower. Cracked or missing grout here lets water behind the tiles.

Kitchen splashbacks

The grout by the hob and sink takes most of the mess. We renew the grout and the worktop sealant.
