Leave it or put it right?

Colouring the surface of old grout is a quick cosmetic fix. They don’t fill cracks or stop water and stains often come back through. Raking out and regrouting replaces the grout itself. Around Tipner, water from a failed joint in an older home can soak into timber and plaster, and that’s a much bigger job than renewing the sealant.

A few things move the cost up or down: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

How we handle regrouting in Tipner

Most regrouting jobs include resealing too. Grout is for the joints between tiles, but corners and edges move, so they’re sealed with silicone rather than grout. Renewing both together means nothing is left half-done. If you are dealing with shower grout that has worn away and corners filled with grout instead of silicone, we can help, on kitchen splashbacks, bathroom wall tiles and wet rooms alike.

Around Tipner, you’ll mostly find houses and bungalows, some older and some much newer. Sealant and grout wear out here just as they do in a big town.

We guarantee the work for a year. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we will sort it.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Surface by surface

Corners and edges

Corners flex as the building moves, so we seal them rather than grout them.

Bathroom floors

Floor grout takes foot traffic as well as water. It wears and darkens over time.

When it isn’t the sealant

Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what new sealant will not do:

  • Tiles that are loose or hollow behind
  • Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling
  • Water coming from plumbing rather than grout

If in doubt, phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we’ll say what we think.

Aftercare tips

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers on grout
  • Give the walls a quick rinse after use
  • Run the extractor fan during and after a shower
  • Skip wire brushes and scourers

Leave the area unused for as long as we advise, so it cures fully. After that, rinse the tiles after showering and keep the room ventilated.

Small problems with grout are quick to put right. Left for a few years, they can become a leak so it’s worth dealing with as soon as you spot it.

How it works

Good joint work is mostly preparation, so that’s where we spend the time. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. In total, it usually takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. Parking around Tipner is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention any lanes, gates or long drives. If the job is outside, tell us about side access and how high the joints are.

  1. We start by checking the tiles for any that are loose or hollow.
  2. We rake out the old grout to an even depth, taking care of the tile edges.
  3. The joints are vacuumed and cleaned.
  4. Fresh grout goes into the joints and the tile faces are wiped clean.
  5. Corners and edges are resealed with flexible silicone, not grout.

Preparing for the visit

  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • Tell us if parking is tricky
  • Move anything stored near the joints

Tipner homes and their sealant

Tipner is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Most of the South East has hard water, so limescale builds up on sealant, grout and fittings.

In the older streets around St Saviour's Church, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant. Schools such as Stamshaw Infant Academy are buildings too, and we reseal washrooms and kitchens in schools and businesses as well as homes.

Tipner is about 1 mile north-west of Portsmouth, in Portsmouth. Anywhere in PO2, we cover regrouting for homes and businesses. 19 places in Portsmouth are on our list, large and small.

Our applicators cover all of PO2 for regrouting and the streets around it. Streets in the area include Knox Road, Croft Road and Whaley Road, and we cover them all. Tipner is on the M275 and A2047, which makes it straightforward to reach with everything needed for regrouting. We also cover North End (1 mile east), Rudmore (1 mile south-east), Portsmouth (1 mile south-east), Landport (1 mile south) and Hilsea (1 mile north-east).

Common problems we fix in Tipner

Soap scum and limescale build up on grout that’s hard to shift. In time the grout under it darkens and breaks down, and at that point, new grout is the better answer.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • Corners filled with grout instead of silicone
  • Stained grout that cleaning won’t shift
  • Cracked or crumbling grout lines
  • Old grout in a dated colour

If you let a flat or house near Portsmouth & Southsea station, a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant.
