External Mastic in Dollar
External mastic across Dollar and nearby, with every bit of old sealant taken out first and a 12-month guarantee.
- Old sealant gone brittle and cracked
- Joints pointed up with cement by mistake
- Failed seals between different materials
What external mastic looks like in Dollar
Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface.
Around Dollar, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

External mastic for homes and businesses in Dollar
Joints in render and cladding are easy to overlook until a damp patch appears. We inspect them, agree which need doing and reseal with a weatherproof, flexible sealant in a colour to suit. If you are dealing with water getting into walls through failed joints and sealant pulling away from one side of the joint, we can help.
Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. On newer homes, the movement joints and roofline trims are what need watching.
We guarantee the work for a year. If something isn’t right with it in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

How the job changes by surface
Joints between dissimilar materials
Different materials may need different primers. We prepare both faces so the sealant bonds properly.
Copings and trims
Coping and trim joints face rain and sun head on. We reseal them with an exterior sealant suited to the material.
How we quote for external mastic
There’s no set price list. The quote depends on:
- How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
- Whether there’s mould to deal with
- The product the joint needs
- Access and height
There are no prices on our website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. For a quick quote, please drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will talk you through it.
Helping us quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:
- If someone has resealed it before
- Roughly how big the job is
- What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
- If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
Call for a quick quote, or send an email if you’d rather. Tell us about the joints that need doing and we’ll explain what’s involved before giving you a price.

Do you need external mastic in Dollar?
Sunlight, wet weather and frost wear exterior sealant down. Over the years it hardens, cracks on the surface and loses its give, so the joint eventually tears or comes away from one side.
It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:
- Damp patches traced to an open external joint
- Plants rooting in failed movement joints
- Joints pointed up with cement by mistake
- Gaps where render, brick and frames meet
In the older streets around Old Parish Church, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.
Questions to ask before you book
- Are they insured?
- Whether they seal over old material or remove it

FAQs for Dollar
What guarantee comes with external mastic in Dollar?
Every job comes with our one-year guarantee, wherever it is. We are fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.
Will you come out to Dollar?
Yes. Dollar is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
What sealant do you use?
Quality sealants from brands including Arbo and Everbuild, chosen to suit the joint. We explain the product when we quote.
Do you hold any approvals?
Yes. We’re ARBOMaster approved, the scheme for applicators of Arbo sealants.
How long should I leave it?
That depends on the sealant used, so please follow the time we give you.
How often do external joints need resealing?
It varies with how exposed the wall is and how much the joint moves. Look for splits, hardening or edges coming away and have them redone then.
Where is Mr Mastic based?
We work from Crawley. We cover Dollar and the rest of Clackmannanshire.
Can you work on commercial sites?
Yes. Hotels, offices and other businesses use us.
Can I do it myself?
A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
A DIY attempt doesn’t rule out a professional job. We remove it and do the joint properly, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.
Landlords, agents and businesses in Dollar
For anyone letting property in or around Dollar, jobs at different addresses can go on one quote. Send us the addresses and the work at each, and pictures by email help.
Hotels need rooms back in use, so the work can be planned room by room. We have worked in hotels as well as homes and businesses.
What happens on the day
Every visit runs the same way: we check the joints, protect the area around them, do the work and tidy away. Most jobs take a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation. In smaller Scottish places, parking is generally less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.
- Each joint is checked and the colour of the new sealant agreed.
- We take out the old sealant until the faces are sound.
- Closed-cell backing rod is pushed in so the sealant bonds to two sides only.
- Primer is applied wherever the sealant needs it.
- A low-modulus exterior sealant is gunned in and tooled to a neat finish.
Before we arrive
- Tell us if parking is tricky
- For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
- On commercial sites, let us know about site rules

Advice
Aftercare tips
After the cure time, these simple habits help:
- Never let anyone fill a movement joint with mortar
- Keep soil, plants and ivy away from the joints
- Check the sealant is paintable before painting near it
- Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter
Avoid pressure-washing straight into the joints. High-pressure water can lift the edges over time.
Leave a failed movement joint and water keeps getting into the wall. Over time it can mean damp inside, stained render or frost-damaged brick, all bigger jobs than a reseal.
