About our remedial sealant in Dollar

A joint that keeps failing usually has a reason. Movement, the wrong product or a leak from somewhere else will defeat even a perfect bead. Finding that cause comes before any new sealant. We work on expansion joints, failed movement joints and mouldy bath & shower sealant, and common reasons people get in touch are a shower that leaks however often it’s resealed and dark patches showing through the sealant.

A bathroom in a place like Dollar gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Limescale is less of a problem with Scotland’s generally soft water, but mould still takes hold in damp sealant and grout.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we’ll sort it.

Dollar: your questions answered

Is there a guarantee on remedial sealant in Dollar?

All our work, in Dollar and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We’re fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Will you come out to Dollar?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Can you reseal a split movement joint?

Yes. If a joint has been filled with mortar or rigid filler, we rake it out where possible, then the joint is sealed properly.

What information do you need?

Just the basics: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. After that, simply send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Do the sealants smell?

It depends on the product. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all.

Are you insured?

Yes. Mr Mastic is fully insured.

How long does the work take?

The number of joints and layers decides it. We will tell you before any work starts.

Can you work on commercial sites?

Yes. Larger jobs can be planned room by room or area by area to suit the site.

When something else is needed

We’ll always be straight with you, so here’s what new sealant will not do:

  • A leaking trap, valve or supply pipe
  • Old mastic in a building from before 2000 that should be checked for asbestos before it’s disturbed
  • A bath, tray or worktop that moves until it’s properly fixed

If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think before booking.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Botched or over-sealed joints
  • Failed movement joints
  • Mouldy bath & shower sealant
  • Leaking tray & enclosure joints
  • Shrunken worktop sealant
  • Expansion joints

How the job changes by surface

Mouldy bath & shower sealant

Where mould keeps coming back, ventilation is generally part of the cause. We’ll reseal and tell you if extraction looks to be the issue.

Over-sealed & botched joints

Botched joints sometimes have damaged edges from earlier scraping. We work carefully to avoid adding to it, and point out any existing damage.

Should I try it myself first?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

Some jobs are best left to a professional: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs call for the right materials, safe access and experience.

How to look after the new joints

Good habits help new joints last longer. A few tips:

  • Run the fan after every shower
  • Check ceilings under showers for marks
  • Find out why the sealant failed first
  • Always have old sealant cut out, not covered

Watch the joint over the first few weeks, especially if movement was the problem. Should anything change, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Movement joints that have split let water into the structure, and left long enough, the edges of the joint can crumble. A joint with sound edges is far easier to reseal.

How we quote for remedial sealant

We do not publish a price list. The quote depends on:

  • The type of sealant required
  • Access and height
  • Mould in or behind the old joints
  • Working hours on commercial sites

What it costs depends on the amount of work, how hard the old material is to remove and how easy the joints are to reach. You’ll have a clear quote before any work starts.

What to tell us for a quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • A few pictures by email, if you can
  • Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • The problem you’ve noticed

For a quote, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with the location and a short description of the problem. You’ll have a clear quote before work begins.

What happens on the day

Every visit runs the same way: we look at the joints together, protect the area around them, carry out the job and tidy away. Most jobs take a few hours for most joints, depending on how much old sealant has to come out. In smaller Scottish places, parking is generally less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. Surrounding tiles, trays and frames are protected first.
  2. The botched or failed sealant is cut away completely.
  3. We clean and degrease the joint and look for signs of movement or water.
  4. Once dry, a suitable sealant is applied and tooled.
  5. You get the cure time and our view on why the joint failed.

Preparing for the visit

  • Clear items away from the joints we’re working on
  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children

Remedial sealant in Dollar: local notes

In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which covers keeping fixtures and fittings in a reasonable state of repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

For an older house near a landmark such as Old Parish Church, timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them. In and around Dollar, as anywhere, good remedial sealant starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.
