Glazing silicone near Dollar

Looking after it afterwards

A little care helps the new joints last. We recommend:

  • Avoid strong solvents on or near the sealant
  • Run a squeegee over the glass when you are done
  • Keep scrapers and blades away from the silicone
  • Ventilate the conservatory to cut condensation

On shower screens, wipe or squeegee after use and keep the room ventilated. It helps stop mould getting into the silicone.

Do not leave lifting or mouldy silicone on glazing. Peeling silicone lets water in behind and the problem grows.

How we handle glazing silicone in Dollar

Glass and frames expand and contract differently, and the silicone between them takes the strain. Once it splits or comes away, water finds a way through. We cut it out and reseal with a glazing silicone suited to the joint. We work on glass-to-frame joints, conservatory frames and rooflights, and the jobs we see most are failed joints on frameless glass and black or yellowed silicone on glass joints.

Many older Scottish homes still have timber windows set into stone walls. The sealant has to suit the stone, which rules out acetoxy silicones that can mark or attack it.

Whatever the size of the job, it’s backed by our 12-month guarantee.

When something else is needed

New sealant can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before work begins. Sealant won’t put right:

  • Misting between the panes of a double-glazed unit (a failed unit for a glazier)
  • Glass that needs replacing
  • Failed flashing around a conservatory

Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

What we seal

  • Rooflights
  • Glass-to-glass joints
  • Conservatory frames
  • Shower screens
  • Glass balustrade bases
  • Glass-to-frame joints

Do you need glazing silicone in Dollar?

The wrong sealant is a common cause. Not every silicone sticks properly to glass and vinegar-smelling acetoxy silicone can attack some metals.

Look out for these signs:

  • Mouldy sealant around glass panels
  • Leaking glazing joints on a rooflight
  • Drips on the inside of a conservatory window
  • Shower screens leaking along the wall or tray

In and around Dollar, as anywhere, good glazing silicone starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

How to choose a mastic man

What glazing silicone looks like in Dollar

Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and sound outside sealant is part of that. Sash and case windows are common in older Scottish homes, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic.

If you live in an older home near Old Parish Church, replacement windows fitted into old openings often leave uneven gaps that need backing and a flexible joint.

Can I do it myself?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

Is Dollar within the area you cover?

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. We work in offices, washrooms, hotels and other commercial premises, as well as homes. We can talk about working times when we quote.

Can tenants book the work?

Of course. Check with your landlord; we can send the quote to them too.

Can landlords and businesses book you?

Yes. We work for householders, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels.

How long does glazing silicone take?

Typically it takes a few hours for most jobs. Bigger jobs take longer, and we’ll say how long yours will take.

Will you leave a mess?

No. We protect the surfaces around the joints, and we tidy up before we go.

Which products do you use?

We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Movement, water and weather all affect the choice, and we will explain our choice.

Why deal with it now?

Topping up old silicone can look like a fix, but silicone doesn’t stick to silicone and water soon finds its way back. A proper reseal is the lasting answer. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

Leaving a failed joint normally makes the job bigger, not smaller, because water and mould keep working on it. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

How it works

We keep the work tidy and contained to the area we’re working on, so you can carry on as normal. Expect the work to take anything from an hour or two to most of a day, depending on the size of the job, and we explain the cure time before we leave. Outdoor work around Dollar depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We trace the leak and confirm it’s a sealant joint.
  2. The failed silicone is cut out without marking the glass or frame.
  3. We clean the glass and frame so the new silicone bonds.
  4. A neutral-cure glazing silicone is applied and tooled.
  5. Each joint is checked and, where possible, water-tested.
