Window mastic in Aith, done properly

Colour matters on a frame. We can seal in white, brown, anthracite grey, black or clear, so the bead blends with the window rather than framing it. We work on timber windows & doors, uPVC windows and window sills, and the jobs we see most are cracked or shrunken mastic around the frame and cold air getting in at the frame edge.

Mastic can only go onto a dry joint, so outside work in Aith depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Let us know about access to every frame, including any upstairs.

Each job carries a 12-month guarantee, whatever its size.

How to look after the new joints

To keep the joints looking good and working properly:

  • Keep jet washers away from the mastic
  • Keep timber frames painted
  • Keep paint off silicone joints
  • Avoid harsh chemicals near the mastic

Wipe the frames with soapy water when you clean the windows, and keep solvents and harsh chemicals off the joint.

A failed joint lets water into the wall a little at a time. Often the first sign is a damp patch inside or flaking paint on the reveal. Catching it early keeps the fix to a reseal.

Your questions about window mastic in Aith

Is Aith within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is window mastic in a coastal place like Aith any different?

Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so preparation and the right sealant matter all the more. Walls facing the sea are generally the first to need attention.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes. Larger jobs can be planned room by room or area by area.

Does the work come with a guarantee?

Yes. Each job is covered for 12 months, inside or out.

Do the sealants smell?

It depends on the product. Some smell for a while, some hardly at all, and any smell fades as they cure.

Can you do upstairs windows?

Yes, as long as they can be reached safely. Let us know about access when you ask for a quote and we will plan for it.

How much does window mastic cost in Aith?

The cost depends on the size of the job, access and how much old sealant has to come out. Ask us for a quote and we’ll talk you through it.

Does someone need to be in?

Access is agreed with you when the job is booked. Indoors, that generally means someone at home.

Honest limits

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • Damp problems in the wall away from the window
  • Broken hinges, locks or handles
  • Worn gaskets, brush seals or a door that has dropped

If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What we seal

  • Composite doors
  • Window sills
  • Patio & French doors
  • uPVC windows
  • Timber windows & doors
  • Aluminium frames

What affects the quote in Aith

Your quote is based on your job. We look at:

  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • How easy the joints are to reach
  • The size of the job
  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove

Combining jobs into one visit normally makes better use of the time than several visits. We will send you a clear quote for the lot.

Helping us quote

Photos help, but a description is a good start. Try to tell us:

  • The address or postcode of the job
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • A few photos by email, if you can

A good description makes for an accurate quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints, and email photos if that is easy.

Why act early in Aith

Redecorating is a good moment to renew the mastic. Fresh joints finish the job neatly. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

A few things move the cost up or down: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. Your quote takes all of that into account.

Why choose Mr Mastic in Aith

  • Trusted Arbo and Everbuild sealants
  • A choice of colours where the product allows
  • Homes, businesses and hotels
  • Anti-fungal silicone where joints get wet

How it works

At the end, we look at the finished work together. The work normally takes a morning for a couple of windows and a door, depending on how much there is to do. For a place like Aith, longer drives are planned in advance. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. First, we confirm safe access to each frame.
  2. Old, cracked mastic is removed completely, along with any loose debris.
  3. The surfaces are cleaned and left dry, and primed where the sealant calls for it.
  4. Deep voids are backed, then the sealant is gunned in.
  5. We tool the joint so water runs off, then clear up.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed

Advice

Window mastic in Aith: local notes

Aith is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on the mastic around window and door frames, especially on the side facing the sea. Island weather, with its wind and salt spray, is tough on the mastic around window and door frames.

In and around Aith, as anywhere, good window mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. In the older streets around Aith Church, frames set in older brick or stone need a sealant that suits the wall as well as the frame.

Window sills

Where a sill meets brick or render, the ends often crack first. A tight seal at each end keeps rain out of the wall.

uPVC windows

We clean the frame edge carefully so the plastic isn’t marked, then the new bead is laid against the frame and the wall.

Can I do it myself?

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions.

Not every job suits DIY: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas need the right product, the right access and the right method.
