Window mastic in Voe: local notes
Voe is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on the mastic around window and door frames, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Work on the islands has to be planned around ferry crossings and the weather, so give us as much notice as you can.
In and around Voe, as anywhere, good window mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Window mastic in Voe, done properly
Mr Mastic’s applicators have more than 20 years’ experience with window and door sealants. We are ARBOMaster approved and fully insured, and every job is covered by a 12-month guarantee. We are often asked to deal with whistling draughts around closed windows and cracked or shrunken mastic around the frame, across patio & French doors, composite doors and window sills.
Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses, many standing in the open. Wind-driven rain finds any gap around a frame or sill.
A one-year guarantee comes as standard, so you’re covered after we have gone.

Why act early in Voe
Getting a straight, even bead on an outside frame takes practice, especially upstairs. We cut out properly, back deep gaps and tool every joint neatly, in a sealant suited to the wall. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.
A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting. If you’re not sure whether it needs doing, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Signs you need window mastic in Voe
Sills take more water than any other part of a window, and the ends of the sill, where it meets the wall, are where it gets in. Failed sealant there lets rain into the wall or behind the frame.
Look out for these signs:
- Mastic that has split away from the wall
- A bead that does not match the frame
- Gaps between the frame and the inside reveal
- Water coming in at the bottom corners of a door
In the older streets around Voe Kirk, the windows may be timber, sash or later replacements, and each needs the right sealant against the wall.

How the job changes by surface
Patio & French doors
The joints around patio doors run a long way, top, sides and threshold. The threshold and the bottom corners take the most water, so they get particular care.
Timber windows & doors
Wood swells when it’s wet and shrinks when it dries, so a flexible sealant is essential. The paint or stain needs to be sound where the sealant meets it.

Keeping the joints in good condition
No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. Our tips:
- Wipe condensation off the frames
- Check the mastic once a year
- Don’t paint over the silicone
- Repaint timber before it’s bare
Have a look at the joints once a year, ideally after winter. Cracks and lifting edges are easy to spot early, and if anything looks wrong, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
Water gets in quietly when mastic fails. Often the first sign is a damp patch inside or flaking paint on the reveal. Early resealing stops it reaching that point.
What happens on the day
Most of a good job is in the preparation, so that is where we spend the time. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. In total, it generally takes a morning for a couple of windows and a door. Outdoor work around Voe depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.
- We start by checking each window and door with you.
- We remove the old mastic and clean the frame and the wall.
- We fit backing rod in deep gaps so the sealant is the right depth.
- A flexible, weatherproof sealant is applied in a colour to suit the frame.
- We clear up and check every joint is fully closed.

Quotes for window mastic in Voe
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:
- Any mould that needs treating
- The old material and how stubborn it is
- The type of sealant required
- How many areas need sealing
Some things make a job bigger or smaller: the old material and how easily it comes out, any mould to treat, and whether the work is at height. Your quote takes all of that into account.
Asking for a quote
When you call or email, it’s useful to know:
- The rough size of the job
- The problem you’ve noticed
- Photos by email, if that is easy
- Access, such as stairs, a lift or height
We quote each job on its own, so start by telling us what you need. Simply send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and describe the job.
When something else is needed
We will not take on work that won’t last, so these are the limits:
- A sash or casement that won’t close properly
- A failed sealed unit that has misted up
- Damp coming through the wall itself rather than the frame joint
If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.
Surfaces we seal
- Window sills
- Patio & French doors
- Aluminium frames
- uPVC windows
- Timber windows & doors
- Composite doors
Voe: your questions answered
Does living near the coast affect window mastic in Voe?
Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so preparation and the right sealant matter all the more. It’s worth checking the walls that face the sea first.
Will you come out to Voe?
Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Do I have to be there?
It depends on the job. For work indoors, someone needs to let us in, while outside work can sometimes be arranged differently.
Can I add another job to the visit?
Yes, and it often makes sense. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit, so mention them when you ask for a quote.
When is the sealant fully cured?
Cure times vary by product. Before we leave, we’ll tell you the cure time.
Can you seal over the old sealant?
No. Fresh sealant doesn’t stick to old sealant, and it traps any mould or water underneath. We remove it all first.
Can you work on commercial sites?
Yes. We can plan bigger jobs in stages to suit the site.
How many windows can you do in a day?
That depends on the number of frames, how they’re reached and the state of the old mastic. We’ll tell you how long your job needs when we quote.
