Vidlin Window Mastic

Our applicators work in Vidlin on mastic around window and door frames, sills and patio doors. Old sealant removed completely, joints prepared properly.

  • Gaps where the sill meets the wall
  • Cracked or shrunken mastic around the frame
  • Rain getting in at the frame or under the sill

How to look after the new joints

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Do not paint over the silicone
  • Keep timber frames painted
  • Wipe condensation off the frames
  • Wash the frames with mild soapy water

Timber frames need their paint kept up, because bare, wet timber moves more and pulls at the joint. Keep paint off the silicone itself.

Water gets in quietly when mastic fails. Often the first sign is a damp patch inside or flaking paint on the reveal. Catching it early keeps the fix to a reseal.

Window mastic for homes and businesses in Vidlin

From a single sill to a whole house of windows, you’ll get a clear quote before any work starts. To get one, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the number of frames and any access details. We work on window sills, aluminium frames and patio & French doors, and people most often call us about untidy mastic left by window fitters and cold air getting in at the frame edge.

Mastic can only go onto a dry joint, so outside work in Vidlin depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.

Our work is backed for twelve months, in Vidlin and everywhere else we cover.

Should I try it myself first?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

Honest limits

Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what sealant can’t fix:

  • Misting between the panes of a double-glazed unit (that needs a new unit)
  • A frame that has rotted at the joint
  • Broken hinges, locks or handles

Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Composite doors
  • Patio & French doors
  • Window sills
  • uPVC windows
  • Aluminium frames
  • Timber windows & doors

Why deal with it now?

A cracked joint around a frame lets rain into the wall. Left long enough, it can stain inside walls, spoil plaster and rot wooden frames. A reseal is a much smaller job. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

We don’t show prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a quick quote, please send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll talk you through it.

Questions from Vidlin

Will you come out to Vidlin?

Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, islands included, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is Vidlin in your area for window mastic?

Yes, Vidlin is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we will give you a clear quote.

Can tenants book the work?

We can work for tenants, landlords or agents. Just make sure your landlord agrees.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Always. Sealing over old sealant is the main reason resealing fails early, so we never do it.

What do you put in the joint?

Each joint gets the product that suits it. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference.

How long should I leave it?

Most sealants are touch-dry well before they’re fully cured. We’ll give you the cure time for the product we used.

Can new sealant go over the old?

No. The old sealant always comes out first, so the new joint bonds to clean surfaces.

What should I tell you?

Just the basics: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. Then send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

How it works

There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us the job and we will take it from there. The work itself takes a few hours for a few frames, or a day or more for a whole house. Outdoor work around Vidlin depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.

  1. We check how each frame can be reached safely.
  2. Old, cracked mastic is removed completely.
  3. Frame and wall are cleaned and must be dry before sealing.
  4. Backing rod fills deep voids and the sealant goes in on top.
  5. The joint is shaped to shed water and the area tidied.

How to prepare

  • Clear items away from the joints we’re working on
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed

Window mastic in Vidlin: local notes

Vidlin is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on the mastic around window and door frames, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

Whether the job is in Vidlin itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish. In and around Vidlin, as anywhere, good window mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Vidlin is in the Shetland Islands. Vidlin gets the same service as everywhere we cover: the old material taken out, joints prepared properly and a 12-month guarantee. Our area takes in 63 places across the Shetland Islands, from the larger towns to small villages.

Every address in ZE2 is covered for window mastic. We also cover Dury (4 miles south), Hamister (4 miles east), Voe (4 miles west), Symbister (4 miles south-east) and Sandwick (4 miles south-east). For island and remote addresses, the job takes a little more planning, so mention it when you ask for a quote.

Window sills

Stone and concrete sills have their own joints, including the one between the sill and the frame above. Those are sealed with a product suited to stone or concrete.

Patio & French doors

Not every patio door leak is a mastic problem: blocked drain slots, worn brush seals and threshold details can let water in too. We look for the cause first.

What affects the cost of window mastic

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • The type of sealant required
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
  • Working hours on commercial sites

What it costs depends on how much there is to do, how much old material has to come out and how easy the joints are to reach. We give a clear quote before any work starts.

What we need to know

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • The problem you’ve noticed
  • How we’d reach the joints

The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints, and email pictures if that is easy.
