Sand mastic in Altens, done properly
Burnt sand mastic is a traditional material blends with stone and brick surrounds. It’s a good fit for period properties where a modern sealant bead would stand out. We’re often asked to deal with cement or filler used on old window joints that has cracked and cracked mastic round a front door frame, across timber door frames, period & listed homes and stone surrounds.
Altens is in one of Scotland’s four big cities, where many older buildings are sandstone or granite. Stone needs a sealant that suits it, which normally means a neutral-cure product or a traditional sand mastic rather than an acetoxy silicone.
All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months, and the guarantee is the same wherever you are.

Altens questions
Does the coastal weather in Altens affect outside sealant?
Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.
Can you help a landlord with a rental near Aberdeen station?
Yes. We work for landlords and agents as well as homeowners. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details for a clear quote.
Can sand mastic be painted?
The usual advice is to leave sand mastic unpainted. If you’re redecorating the window, ask us first and we will advise.
Are you an approved applicator?
Yes. Mr Mastic is an ARBOMaster approved applicator.
What guarantee comes with the work?
All our work has a 12-month guarantee.
What do you need from me for a quote?
The location, the problem and the rough size of the job. If you can, email a few pictures.
Is it OK to seal over old sealant?
No, because it fails. The old sealant always comes out first.
Do you remove the old sealant?
Yes. We cut out all the old sealant and clean the joint before resealing.

Brick reveals
Gaps between frame and brick let in rain and draughts. New mastic seals the gap.
Sand mastic in Altens: local notes
Altens is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That’s hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, especially on the side facing the sea. Sash and case windows are common in older Scottish homes, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic.
Managing a site like Lochside Academy? Then its window and door frames need their mastic kept sound, just like a home’s. In the older streets around Nigg Parish Church, frames set in older brick or stone need a sealant that suits the wall as well as the frame.
Altens is about 2 miles south-east of Ferryhill, in Aberdeen. Altens gets the same service as everywhere we cover: old sealant removed completely, careful preparation and a 12-month guarantee. Altens is one of 63 towns and villages in Aberdeen where we work for sand mastic.
Work in AB12, AB99 and AB10 works the same way as everywhere else we cover. Sand mastic is available to properties on Minto Road, Redmoss Road and Minto Avenue and the roads around them. Do you need sand mastic in Altens?
Decorating can disturb tired mastic. Many people find it crumbling when they prepare the windows.
Look out for these signs:
- A silicone bead on a sash window that spoils the look
- Mastic round period door frames that has failed
- Patchy fillers round a sash window
- Failed mastic on an exposed elevation
Letting a property close to Aberdeen station? Then older sash windows in a rental need their mastic kept sound to keep the weather out.

The process
The work is kept neat and contained to the area we are working on, so you can get on with your day. Expect the work to take anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on how many windows. Many homes in Scotland’s cities are tenement flats, reached through a shared close and up a common stair. In Altens, it helps to know the floor, the door entry arrangements and the nearest parking.
- First we agree which joints need doing.
- We remove the old, loose mastic.
- We pack any deep voids first.
- The sand mastic is mixed and pressed into the joint by hand.
- We dress the finish so it sits neatly against the masonry.
Preparing for the visit

- For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in

What to tell us for a quote
What to tell us when you ask for a quote:
- What’s wrong with the joints now
- A few photos by email, if you can
- The address or postcode of the job
- Roughly how big the job is
Every job is quoted individually. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details.
Should I try it myself first?
The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions.
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
