Kitchen splashbacks

We can regroute a splashback with the kitchen left in place. The worktop edge is finished with silicone.

Corners and edges

Internal corners move, so we seal them rather than grout them.

How we handle regrouting in Cramond

A bathroom with good tiles can still look worn if the grout has gone. Regrouting replaces the grout and keeps the tiles you have, so there’s no stripping out and no new tiles to choose. If you’re dealing with grout in a colour the owner wants to change and cracked or crumbling grout lines, we can put it right, on shower walls, wet rooms and bathroom floors alike.

Being further from a city does not change the work: everything old is cut out, the joints are cleaned and dried, and new sealant or grout goes in. The journey and access are simply planned in advance.

We guarantee the work for a year. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we’ll sort it.

Why it’s worth doing now in Cramond

Regrouting keeps the tiles you already have. Retiling means stripping the walls, making good and choosing new tiles, and the room is out of use for longer. If the tiles are sound, regrouting is the simpler fix. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference.

What you get with us

  • Any old sealant cut out fully, not covered over
  • Over 20 years’ experience
  • A 12-month guarantee on all work
  • Neat joints and a tidy finish

What happens on the day

We bring everything the job needs with us, so you don’t need to buy or prepare anything. Once we have agreed what’s being done, the area is protected and the work begins. Most jobs take anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.

  1. We check the tiles for any that are hollow or loose.
  2. We rake out the grout evenly, protecting the tile edges.
  3. The joints are vacuumed clean.
  4. New grout is pressed into the joints and the tiles are cleaned.
  5. Silicone goes into the corners and along the edges.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in

Looking after it afterwards

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Look at the sealant in the corners now and then
  • Don’t ignore a tile that feels loose
  • Stick to mild products for cleaning grout
  • Keep the fan on after showering

Clean the grout with a mild bathroom cleaner with a soft brush. Keep harsh bleach and acid limescale removers away from it because they wear grout away.

Fixing grout early is a small job. Left, the same problem can let water through so it’s worth dealing with as soon as you spot it.

Honest limits

We will always be straight with you, so here’s what sealant cannot fix:

  • A floor or wall that keeps moving
  • Tiles that have come away from the wall
  • Tiles that are chipped or split

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Tenement flats are common across Edinburgh, and in a tenement, a leaking seal can reach the neighbours below.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Craigmount High School, we reseal washrooms and kitchens in schools and businesses as well as homes.

I let a flat near Edinburgh Gateway station. Can you help?

Yes, rental work is part of what we do. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us about the property, and we’ll give you a clear price.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes. We cut out all the old sealant and clean the joint before applying anything new.

How long should I wait before showering?

It varies with the products and the room. We’ll give you a time to follow at the end of the visit.

Are you ARBOMaster approved?

Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status, and we’re fully insured.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes, we can. Several rooms, windows or areas can go on one quote.

Should corners be grouted or sealed?

Silicone. Grout belongs between the tiles and moving joints need sealant.

How long does the job take?

It depends on the size of the job, but as a guide it takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. We’ll give you a better idea when we quote.

What we’re called out for in Cramond

Poor ventilation keeps grout damp, and damp grout is where mould grows. When black spots keep returning, the mould has normally got into the grout.

These are the problems we are asked about most:

  • Good tiles let down by tired grout
  • Grout that’s cracking and breaking up
  • Grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned
  • Floor grout that will not come clean

Rented homes near Edinburgh Gateway station change hands often, and clean grout and fresh sealant between tenancies make a bathroom look cared for again.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is VAT in the price?
  • Which colour the sealant will be
  • Is the old sealant removed completely?
  • Whether the sealant suits the joint
