Gutter sealing in Medway: how it works
Water dripping from a gutter joint can stain walls and soak the ground below. Often a reseal is enough if the gutter is not damaged. We’re often asked to deal with water dripping where gutter sections meet and streaks down the brickwork from a leaking joint, across uPVC fascias, soffit joints and gutter joints.
On the day, we start by going over the job with you. Surfaces next to the work are protected before any work starts. Most jobs take anything from an hour or two to a few hours.
- We start by tracing the leak and checking the gutter itself is sound.
- Old sealant and dirt are removed from the joint.
- The joint is dried, because sealant won’t bond to a wet surface.
- Gutter or exterior sealant is applied and finished.
- We check the run and clear any debris we find while we are there.
How we quote
We don’t show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. Call for a quick quote and we will talk you through it.

What’s near Gillingham
Locally, jobs take us to homes and businesses close to The Robert Napier School, Featherby Junior School and The Robert Napier School. Nearby too are Holy Trinity Church (within half a mile north-east), The Star pub (0.6 miles west) and Ambley Wood (0.8 miles south). For rail, the closest station is Gillingham (Kent) station, roughly 1.5 miles north-west. Nearby you will also find Medway Maritime Hospital (1.6 miles west) and Six Poor Travellers House (3.3 miles west). Not far away are Blue Bell Hill and Bishop Saltings.
Walls and rooflines across Medway
Across Medway, from Gillingham, Chatham and Rochester outwards, outside joints range from old gutters to modern movement joints. Each needs a sealant that can move, laid at the right depth.
The South East is one of the drier parts of the UK, but outdoor sealant still needs a dry day and clean surfaces, so outside work in Medway is planned around the forecast. Medway includes coastal places, where outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland. Joints on seaward walls tend to fail first.
Gillingham: If you look after a building such as Featherby Junior School, movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s. In the older streets around Holy Trinity Church, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.
Different surfaces, different methods
uPVC fascias
We seal fascia joints, not replace the boards. If boards are damaged, we’ll tell you.
Gutter joints
Joints between gutter lengths are the most common leak point. We clean, dry and reseal them.
Common problems we fix in Medway
Stop ends take pressure from water running along the gutter. Once the seal behind them fails, they drip and runs down the wall.
The most common problems we see are:
- Dripping gutter ends
- Rain getting in around a garage door
- Gaps along fascia and soffit joints
- Streaks down the brickwork from a leaking joint
Should I try it myself first?
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.
When it isn’t the sealant
We won’t take on work that will not last, so here’s what sealant cannot put right:
- Problems with the roof covering
- Downpipes that are blocked or broken
- A gutter length that has split
What affects the cost of gutter sealing
The price is agreed before any work begins. It takes into account:
- The product the joint needs
- The number and length of the joints
- How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
- Any working-time requirements on site
No two jobs are quite the same, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all play a part.
Asking for a quote
Photos by email are helpful but not essential. Try to tell us:
- The address or postcode of the job
- Whether it’s a home or a business
- How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
- What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
A good description makes for an accurate quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints.
Medway: your questions answered
Can you fit new guttering?
That’s not something we do. We seal joints; replacing gutters and fascias needs a gutter or roofline installer.
Is sealing fascia joints something you do?
Yes. Open joints along uPVC fascias and soffits can be sealed in a matching colour.
I rent my home. Can I book you?
Of course. Ask your landlord first, and we can send them the quote if that helps.
Will sealing fix a sagging gutter?
It won’t last. The movement opens the joint again so the gutter has to be refixed first.
How long should I leave it?
Most sealants are touch-dry well before they’re fully cured. We will give you the cure time for the product we used.
What do you need from me for a quote?
Only a few details: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. Then call 0345 464 0079 or email us.
Do you come to Medway?
We do. Medway is part of the area we cover, and the service is the same as everywhere else.
