Bathroom resealing near Covesea

Can I do it myself?

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs need the right product, the right access and the right method.

Bathroom resealing in Covesea

Resealing is a small job that makes a big difference. Mouldy silicone makes even a new bathroom look neglected, and a neat new joint puts that right in a short visit. Just as important, it closes the gaps water would otherwise get through. We work on sinks & splashbacks, kitchen worktops & upstands and wet rooms, and people most often call us about mouldy sealant that has gone black and leaks into the floor or ceiling below.

A bathroom in a place like Covesea gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything isn’t right with it, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

When to call us in Covesea

Silicone needs a clean, dry surface without any grease to stick to. Soap residue, oils and leftover silicone film all get in the way, so a rushed job can start to lift early.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Black mould in the silicone that will not clean off
  • Leaking joints on a shower screen
  • Sealant that has split, shrunk or peeled away
  • New sealant laid over old sealant that is now lifting

In and around Covesea, as anywhere, good bathroom resealing starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Before booking anyone

  • How long the guarantee is
  • Is the old sealant removed completely?
  • How the joint is cleaned and prepared
  • Who turns up on the day

Choosing a sealant specialist

What happens on the day

The work is kept neat and contained to the joints we’re treating, so you can get on with your day. Expect the work to take around two hours for one bath or shower, longer for a whole bathroom, and we tell you how long to leave it before we go. Somewhere like Covesea may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. We start by protecting the area and stripping out the old bead.
  2. The joint is cleaned, degreased and treated for mould.
  3. The joint is left to dry, and baths are filled with water first.
  4. We apply anti-fungal sanitary silicone in one even bead and tool it neatly.
  5. We tidy up and give you the cure time, usually around 24 hours.

Preparing for the visit

  • Clear items away from the joints we’re working on
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Let us know about parking restrictions

When something else is needed

Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what new sealant will not do:

  • Cracks in the tray itself rather than the joint
  • Cracked or missing grout between tiles (that is regrouting)
  • Loose or hollow tiles, or failed tanking behind them

If you are not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Basins & vanity units
  • Sinks & splashbacks
  • Baths
  • Kitchen worktops & upstands
  • Wet rooms
  • Shower trays & enclosures

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:

  • Let new sealant cure fully before it gets wet
  • Never pick at the silicone with a blade
  • Wipe the sealant dry after showering
  • Open a window or run the fan so the room dries

Mould needs damp, so keep the room aired. Run the extractor fan during and after a shower, so the silicone gets a chance to dry.

A failed kitchen joint is easy to miss. Splashes run behind the back edge and soak into the worktop, where it can make the board swell. A reseal in time can save the worktop.

What the job involves on each surface

Basins & vanity units

The back of a basin gets wet every time someone washes. Corners behind basins are where mould tends to start, so it’s cut out and renewed just like a bath joint.

Sinks & splashbacks

Next to the sink, the sealant has to cope with constant water, including a food-safe sealant where that’s needed. The joint is laid neatly so it’s easy to wipe.

Covesea questions

Do you cover smaller places like Covesea?

Yes. Covesea is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Do you take on hotel work around Covesea?

Yes, hospitality work, including hotels, is part of what we do. Jobs can be programmed room by room, with out-of-hours working possible to arrange.

Can new silicone go straight over the old?

No. Sealing over the top looks fine for a few weeks, then lifts, because silicone does not bond to silicone. We remove the old bead completely before resealing.

Can you get rid of the black mould in my sealant?

Yes, we can. The old sealant comes out, the mould is treated, and we reseal with anti-fungal sanitary silicone.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Of course. Combining jobs makes good use of the visit, so mention them when you ask for a quote.

What sealant do you use?

It depends on the joint: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. We use products from Arbo and Everbuild.

How long does the new silicone need before I use the shower?

After around 24 hours in most cases. We will tell you the cure time for the product we used.

Where are you based?

Our base is in Crawley, West Sussex, and we work across South East England, London and Scotland.
