Walls Regrouting

DIY sealant or a professional job?
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.
Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
How we handle regrouting in Walls
Before we start, the tiles are checked. Loose or hollow tiles are pointed out first, since new grout cannot fix a problem underneath. Where the tiles are sound, regrouting gives the area a new lease of life. If you have crumbling grout between the tiles and grout in a colour the owner wants to change, we can put it right, whatever the surface.
A bathroom in a place like Walls gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.
We guarantee the work for a year. If something isn’t right with it in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

Why it’s worth doing now in Walls
Bleach can lighten stained grout for a while, but mould that has got into grout usually comes back. Replacing the grout and resealing the edges is a lasting fix. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.
A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re not sure whether it needs doing, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

Looking after it afterwards
So the new joints stay in good condition:
- Keep harsh bleach and acid cleaners off the grout
- Get any tile that moves checked promptly
- Run the extractor fan during and after a shower
- Stick to mild products for cleaning grout
Use a gentle cleaner on the grout and a soft brush. Avoid neat bleach and strong acid descalers, as they can break grout down.
Leaving failed grout can mean tiles come loose. By then, new grout alone is not enough, so it’s worth acting early.
How the job changes by surface
Bathroom floors
If floor grout keeps cracking, the floor may be moving. We check the tiles before regrouting.
Wet rooms
Both the grout and the silicone in a wet room matter. We renew both.
FAQs for Walls
Will you come out to Walls?
Yes. Walls is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
What guarantee comes with regrouting in Walls?
All our work, in Walls and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We’re also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.
How long does the job take?
That depends on how much there is to do, but as a guide it takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. We’ll tell you when we quote.
Could my grout be a different colour after regrouting?
Yes. It’s the ideal time to change it. Mention the colour you have in mind when you email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
How long should I wait before showering?
The wait depends on the materials and how warm the room is. We will give you a time to follow at the end of the visit.
Can I add another job to the visit?
Yes, we can. Several rooms, windows or areas can go on one quote.
Should I try DIY first?
You can, for simple jobs. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. If it does not work out, we can redo it.
What do you need from me for a quote?
Just the basics: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. Then email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
What we do, step by step
Once we’re on site, we check the joints match what you told us. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. After that, the work takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. In smaller Scottish places, parking is generally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.
- First, we check for loose or hollow tiles and point out any we find.
- Old grout is raked out to a consistent depth without chipping the tiles.
- We vacuum the joints and clean out the dust.
- We fill the joints with new grout, then clean the tiles.
- The corners and edges get new silicone, because grout there would crack.
How to prepare
- Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
- Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work
- Let us know about parking restrictions

Signs you need regrouting in Walls
Movement behind the tiles cracks grout. Loose tiles, bouncy floors and timber walls can all do it, so we check the tiles before we start.
It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:
- Grout in corners that has cracked
- Grout that is cracking and breaking up
- Stained grout that cleaning won’t shift
- Gaps where the shower grout has gone
In and around Walls, as anywhere, good regrouting starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Bathrooms and kitchens in Walls
Walls is close to the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Island jobs need planning around ferries and the weather, so the more notice, the better.
Whether the job is in Walls itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

Honest limits
Sealant isn’t the answer to every problem, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not solve:
- A floor or wall that keeps moving
- Water coming from plumbing rather than grout
- Tiles that are chipped or split
If you are not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer.
