Melby questions

Is Melby in your area for regrouting?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Melby is part of that. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing.

Will you come out to Melby?

Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

I rent my home. Can I book you?

Yes. Check with your landlord; we can send the quote to them too.

Should I try DIY first?

It depends on the job. High-level, external movement and fire-rated joints are professional jobs, while a short indoor joint may be within reach.

Will it make a mess?

We keep the work tidy. We protect what’s around the joints.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. Mr Mastic is fully insured, with over 20 years’ experience in sealant work.

Do you grout the corners?

Corners get silicone, not grout. They flex, and grout there cracks.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Yes. We cut out all the old sealant and clean the joint before applying anything new.

Regrouting in Melby

Changing the grout colour is a simple way to update tiles. Light grout can go darker to hide marks or back again. Tell us what you have in mind when you ask for a quote. If you’re dealing with cracked or crumbling grout lines and cracked grout along the bath or tray, we can help, on shower walls, kitchen splashbacks and bathroom wall tiles alike.

In and around a place like Melby, homes range from older stone-built properties to newer houses. Older buildings can move a little, and that shows first in cracked grout and split sealant.

You are covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything is not right with it, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Can I do it myself?

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that’s fine. We remove it and do the joint properly, so just mention it when you contact us.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.

What the job involves on each surface

Corners and edges

The joint between tiles and a bath, tray or worktop gets silicone. Grout there would crack.

Kitchen splashbacks

Splashback grout picks up grease and cooking stains. Stained grout is best replaced.

What we do, step by step

Good joint work is mostly preparation, and we don’t rush it. Every joint is cleaned and dried before new material goes in. In total, it normally takes a few hours for a shower enclosure, longer for a whole room. Somewhere like Melby may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
  2. The old grout is removed to an even depth.
  3. The joints are vacuumed clean.
  4. We regrout the joints and clean the tile faces.
  5. We finish with silicone in the moving joints.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
  • Mention any tricky access

What we cannot put right

New sealant can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. Sealant will not put right:

  • Leaks from pipes, valves or wastes (a plumber’s job)
  • Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling
  • Tiles that have come away from the wall

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Surfaces we seal

  • Kitchen splashbacks
  • Tiled floors
  • Bathroom floors
  • Bathroom wall tiles
  • Shower walls
  • Wet rooms

What we’re called out for in Melby

Strong cleaning products and hard scrubbing slowly erode grout. Some bleaches and acid descalers break grout down with repeated use, leaving the joints sunken and rough.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • Grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned
  • Old grout in a dated colour
  • Good tiles let down by tired grout
  • Kitchen splashback grout stained by grease

Around Melby, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

What to look for in a quote

  • What insurance they hold
  • What the cure time is
  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • What preparation is included

Bathrooms and kitchens in Melby

Melby is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Island jobs need planning around ferries and the weather, so the more notice, the better.

For an older house near a landmark such as St Margaret's Kirk and Graveyard, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.

Melby is in the Shetland Islands. Melby gets the same service as everywhere we cover: the old material taken out, joints prepared properly and a 12-month guarantee. Our the Shetland Islands coverage runs to 63 places, Melby among them.

We cover every part of the ZE2 postcode area for regrouting. Nearby, we also carry out regrouting in Sandness (1 mile south-east), Walls (6 miles south-east), Aith (10 miles east), Easter Skeld (11 miles south-east) and Brae (12 miles north-east). Island and remote addresses take a little more planning, so please mention your location when you send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Why act early in Melby

Grouting over old grout rarely lasts. It sits thinly on top and soon flakes away. Removing the old grout to an even depth lets the new grout key in properly. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

Leaving a failed joint normally makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Why us?

  • Approved under the ARBOMaster scheme
