How we quote for regrouting

Every job gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • The old material and how stubborn it is
  • Access and height
  • Any working-time requirements on site
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with

What it costs depends on the size of the job, how much old material has to come out and how easy the joints are to reach. We give a clear quote before work begins.

What to tell us for a quote

Photos help, but a description is a good start. Please mention:

  • If someone has resealed it before
  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • Photos by email, if that’s easy
  • The rough size of the job

The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints, and add pictures by email if you can.

About our regrouting in Hawkhead

Regrouting suits shower walls, bathroom floors, kitchen splashbacks and wet rooms. Some jobs are a whole room, or just the area that has failed. Whatever the size, the method stays the same. If you are dealing with greasy, stained grout behind the hob and corners filled with grout instead of silicone, we can help, whatever the surface.

Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses. Where a building moves, cracked grout and split sealant are normally the first signs.

You are covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything is not right with it, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Looking after it afterwards

No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:

  • Don’t use strong acidic cleaners on grout
  • Use a soft brush rather than a wire one
  • Keep the fan on after showering
  • Rinse the tiles after showering

A squeegee or cloth over the tiles after use keeps water off the grout. Ventilate the room well so the grout dries between uses.

Small problems with grout are quick to put right. Left, the same problem can let water through so it’s worth dealing with as soon as you spot it.

Should I try it myself first?

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We remove it and do the joint properly, so just mention it when you contact us.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

How it works

The work is kept neat and contained to the area we’re working on, so you can get on with your day. Expect the work to take a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room, and we explain the cure time before we leave. Somewhere like Hawkhead may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. First we agree what’s being done and flag any loose tiles.
  2. Grout is raked out without chipping the tiles.
  3. The joints are cleaned out and vacuumed.
  4. We grout the joints and wipe the tiles clean.
  5. Internal corners and edges are resealed.

Preparing for the visit

Advice

What the job involves on each surface

Bathroom wall tiles

We can regroute all the walls in a bathroom, depending on size. It’s a good time to change the grout colour.

Corners and edges

The joint between tiles and a bath, tray or worktop gets silicone. Grout in that joint wouldn’t last.

Hawkhead: your questions answered

Do you cover Hawkhead for regrouting?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Hawkhead is part of that. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing.

Is Hawkhead within the area you cover?

Yes. Hawkhead is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Can you work on commercial sites?

Yes. Larger jobs can be planned room by room or area by area.

Are you an approved applicator?

Yes. Mr Mastic is an ARBOMaster approved applicator.

Can you regrout just the shower?

We can. We will look at the rest of the room too and let you know if more needs doing.

Can tenants book the work?

Of course. Check with your landlord; we can send the quote to them too.

Can new sealant go over the old?

No, because it fails. The old sealant always comes out first, so the new sealant bonds properly.

Do the sealants smell?

There can be a smell while the sealant cures, which fades as it sets. Ventilation helps.

What regrouting looks like in Hawkhead

In Scotland, private landlords have to meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping fixtures and fittings in reasonable repair. Failed sealant around a bath or shower is worth sorting between tenancies. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

If you look after a building such as St Andrew's Academy, its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s. If you let a flat or house near Hawkhead station, clean grout and fresh sealant between tenancies make a bathroom look cared for again.

What we cannot put right

To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant won’t fix:

  • Tiles that have come away from the wall
  • Cracked or broken tiles
  • A structure that flexes behind the tiles

If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think.

What we seal

  • Kitchen splashbacks
  • Wet rooms
  • Shower walls
  • Bathroom wall tiles
  • Bathroom floors
  • Tiled floors

Why it’s worth doing now in Hawkhead

With regrouting, your tiles stay where they are. Retiling means stripping the walls, making good and choosing new tiles, and often a few days without a shower. When the tiles are fine, it’s the sensible first step. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: how much there is to do, how we reach it and what it needs, along with when we can work on site. Call for a quick quote and we will explain what it covers.
