Hawkhead Window Mastic
Window mastic for Hawkhead and the surrounding area: careful preparation, the right product and tidy work. Ask us for a quick quote.
- Draughts coming in around windows and doors
- Gaps between the frame and the inside reveal
- Rain getting in at the frame or under the sill
How we handle window mastic in Hawkhead
The mastic around a window or door seals the gap between the frame and the wall. Once that seal fails, wind and rain find the gap. Our applicators cut it out and replace it with a flexible, weatherproof sealant. If you’re dealing with damp patches on the reveal after heavy rain and mastic that has split away from the wall, we can help.
Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses, many standing in the open. Wind-driven rain finds any gap around a frame or sill.
The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If something isn’t right with it in that time, tell us and we’ll put it right.

Hawkhead questions
Is Hawkhead within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
Can you do window mastic in Hawkhead?
Yes, Hawkhead is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing.
Does someone need to be in?
It depends on the job. Inside work needs someone to give us access.

Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status and we’re fully insured too.
How do I get a quote for window mastic in Hawkhead?
Every job is different, so each one gets its own quote. To get one, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a short description of the job.
Can you seal the gap between the frame and the plaster indoors?
Yes. The outside joint keeps the weather out, and the inside joint stops draughts and finishes the reveal. We can do either or both.
How long should I leave it?
Cure times vary by product. We tell you how long to leave it before we go.
Can you do several jobs on one visit?
Of course. Doing several areas at once is normally more efficient, so mention them when you ask for a quote.
How the visit works
Every visit runs the same way: we check the joints, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, do the work and clear up. It generally takes a few hours for a few frames, or a day or more for a whole house. For a place like Hawkhead, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.
- First we look at every frame and agree the list.
- The old mastic is cut out and the surfaces cleaned back.
- Deep gaps are filled with backing rod to set the depth.
- We apply a weatherproof sealant to match the frame and tool it neatly.
- Every joint is checked before we leave.
Getting ready for the visit
- Keep children and pets away from the work area
- Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height
- Clear the area around the work
How to get a quote
Getting a quote is simple: let us know what needs doing and where, and roughly how big it is. Photos by email help us understand the job, and we’ll come back to you with a quote.

Windows and doors in Hawkhead
Sash and case windows are common in older Scottish homes, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic. With historic houses such as Pollok House (about 2.6 miles east) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Hawkhead as well as newer homes. Where a home is older, older frames set in brick or stone need a sealant that suits them, and sometimes that is traditional sand mastic.
Historic houses such as Pollok House, about 2.6 miles east, show how far back building around Hawkhead goes, and older homes nearby need a sealant that suits their walls. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Andrew's Academy, its window and door frames need their mastic kept sound, just like a home’s.

When it is not the sealant
Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we will tell you before any work starts. It won’t solve:
- A sash or casement that won’t close properly
- A frame that has rotted at the joint
- Misting between the panes of a double-glazed unit (that needs a new unit)
If you’re not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

- Window sills
DIY versus a professional finish
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.
If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We remove it and do the joint properly, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.
Surface by surface
Aluminium frames
Metal frames expand in the sun and are often slim, with little room for error. A tidy bead in anthracite grey, black or a matching colour suits the frame.
Window sills
Sills catch the water running down the glass, so the sill ends and the joint under the frame are vital. They’re cut out and resealed with exterior sealant.
Keeping the joints in good condition
Good habits help new joints last longer. Our tips:
- Air rooms to keep condensation down around windows
- Do not use solvent cleaners on the joint
- Clear any debris from frame drain holes
- Keep paint and stain on wooden frames in good order
Check the drainage slots in the frames aren’t blocked, so rain drains out rather than building up at the sealant.
Signs to watch for: cracks in the mastic, gaps you can see light through, damp on the reveal or mould around the inside of the frame. Any of these is worth a call.

What we’re called out for in Hawkhead
Timber windows bring their own problems. Old mastic gets painted over and cracks under the paint, and the wood moves with damp as well as heat.
The most common problems we see are:
- Rushed sealant from a window installation
- Whistling draughts around closed windows
- Mastic that is falling out in pieces
- A bead that doesn’t match the frame
For landlords with property near Hawkhead station, cracked frame mastic tends to show up as a draught or damp complaint, so it’s worth checking between lets.
